Mark Twain for the Gifted & Talented (I.S. 239) is a citywide school in Coney Island, Brooklyn, serving grades 6-8. Your child is eligible to apply and test or audition for up to two talent areas that the school offers. These talent areas include:

  • Art
  • Computer/Math
  • Creative Writing/Journalism
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Instrumental: Strings
  • Instrumental: Winds
  • Media
  • Science
  • Vocal Music

Admissions to the seven visual and performing art programs, Art, Dance, Drama, Media, Strings, Winds, and Vocal, will be based on Virtual Auditions. Students will submit their audition material via Additional Materials in MySchools by December 8. These programs will require a virtual submission of artwork, musical ability, performance of a monologue, or some written material. 

The other talents, Computer Math, Creative Writing/Journalism, Science, and Athletics* tests will be held in person at Mark Twain. You must register to take the test and add it to your application to be considered for the program. The deadline to register is November 10

Applicants may apply to one or two admissions programs at Mark Twain. This may include two programs using talent tests, two programs using auditions, or one of each.  

The following six District 21 schools admit students based on their score on the Mark Twain Talent Tests: 

  • Seth Low (I.S. 96) 
  • The Bay Academy (I.S. 98) 
  • David A. Boody (I.S. 228) 
  • Mark Twain for the Gifted and Talend (I.S. 239) 
  • Joseph B Cavallaro (I.S. 281) 
  • Herbert S. Eisenberg (I.S. 303) 

Only students and residents of District 21 are eligible to apply to these programs. District 21 applicants can apply to one or two types of D21 talent programs across all schools including Mark Twain. 

*Please be advised that Mark Twain will not have an Athletics program in the Fall 2024 school year. I.S. 228 David A Boody, I.S 281 Jospeh Cavallaro, and I.S. 098 Bay Academy will have an Athletics program.
