#1 New York Times Bestseller

"This book is from the heart of a woman who practices each lesson she preaches. It struck a deep chord in me as a mother trying to raise a daughter in difficult times."  — Hillary Clinton

The Measure of Our Success is a book to turn lives around: a compassionate message for parents trying to raise moral children, a tough and searching book that ought to be required reading for every young American.

The book speaks powerfully to the author's three sons about the mothering Marian Wright Edelman gave them—mothering, she explains, that could not ignore other people's children who were in greater need. In the book's centerpiece, "Twenty-Five Lessons for Life," we're invited to listen as a loving and extraordinarily committed mother gives her children lessons to live by.

The Measure of Our Success is an open letter to all America, and a timely message of hope and purpose for everyone.

This is an old classic that has been on my shelf for years. it is a classic because the message never goes out of date. I first read this when I was young mothering and then again and again as I was teenage mothering. It reminded me of the importance of the relationships within our own walls. We read the "twenty five lessons for life" out loud at the dinner table a number of times. Now our adult children are reading it aloud to their children. Thanks Marian Wright Edelman, wish we were related but we are surely like-minded.Blessings,Judy Helm Wright

I first read this book some 15 years ago when it was first published. Every now and then your read something so amazing that you wanna share it with the world and this was one of thoes books. It became "that book" I gave copies to all of my friends who were parents. I was recently discussing this book it brough back so many memories, I decided for x mas 2012 it would be " that book" once again. I have also encouraged my parent group the WBAAPA.org to have this as part of our discussion group. The life lessons cross every social and economic backgroung, great lessons and good old common sense. This message is as true today, as it was when first pubilshed. Get one for yourself, your neighbor and any parent young or old to help them be reminded of some basic values that help make us good and decent people. This is a must read and should be standard for every parenting group book club and other groups looking to enlighten our society.

Drawing from inspirational experiences from her own childhood, Dr. Edelman talks to (not at) her own children, urging them, in whatever occupation they may choose, to serve the community at large. This is also a book for adults (parents, educators, and religious and community leaders) to read, to live a life of principles and a desire to somehow make the world a better place - in short, to serve as the strong, positive role model that so many of our children have had to do without.
The book is also an indictment on how American society and political leadership do a great job at paying lip service to the needs of children but fails miserably in their actions. Complaining, however, is not enough; if children are to grow up to be conscientious and caring citizens, adults must set a good example.
It's a small book with a big heart and a great message. I strongly recommend it to anyone who cares about children and social justice in general.

This is a book I give to my young nieces and nephews as they become a parent. I also give it as an "Adda woman/Man present to young professionals as the book you forgot to put in your home library. Wow now 35 years later it still remains my favorite of "life's teaching and provoking advice books".

- like: this book is not just a book of a fictional or a non-fictional story. It’s deeper than that, it speaks on a personal experience of writer while relating to other well known names. Yet the purpose is to give a lesson, I bet every single person can take ATLEAST one lesson from this book.
