After reading the first pages it seems Beverly isn't the sweet naive girl Drew
Barrymore portrays on screen. As young as 12 years old, she's already made up her mind to squeeze everything she can into her young life.
From smoking and underage drinking to
losing her virginity in the back seat of a car at fourteen to a boy she's only known a few short hours. The thing I liked most was that she tells the unvarnished truth unlike the sugar coated movie version. Everything from her drug use and promiscuity, to her blatant disregard and resentment of her son.
Through out the book, instead of feeling bad for her circumstances, you wish
she would stop blaming everyone and thing especially her son, for her life
style choices. The beginning starts out
interesting and flows nicely without unimportant details and pauses to the
flow. A very enjoyable and eye opening
read.
1. Its length. I truly thought it would be longer than it was.
2. It was completely DIFFERENT than the movie (and the author *who the story is based off of* directed / produced the movie!)
It was a good book. But I would much rather stick with the movie than the book on this one. And that's saying something coming from me because I usually prefer the book over the movie (s).
