Larry Donner, an author with a cruel ex-wife, teaches a writing workshop in which one of his students, Owen, is fed up with his domineering mother. When Owen watches a Hitchcock classic that seems to mirror his own life, he decides to put the movie's plot into action and offers to kill Larry's ex-wife, if Larry promises to murder his mom. Before Larry gets a chance to react to the plan, it seems that Owen has already set things in motion.

The funny far outweighs the unfunny, and it was shot by Barry Sonnenfeld so it looks amazing. Throw in the fact it's a spritely 88 minutes and you could do a lot worse on a rain-fucked Sunday afternoon.

The first time I ever heard of this movie was actually on a TV spot on TCM. And from the clips and things I’ve heard from the movie, I was expecting a hilarious dark comedy, but what I actually got was a nice and comedic reimagining of Hitchcock’s classic Strangers on a Train that showed a lot of promise at first, just to lose its focus on the second half as it starts to meander a lot and literally becomes this messy nonsensical cartoon (with Mickey Mousing effects included) with Crystal and DeVito yelling each other as they become more paranoid. I can totally see how this thing inspired them there Horrible Bosses movies. A dark, maniacal and ridiculous comedy that puts a justification to murdering those who have wronged you and that is excelled by another great "odd but likeable"…
I crack up every time I see the scene where Danny Devito is calling from different pay phones in Hawaii. Then it cuts to the one out in the middle of the field next to a horse. So stupid. But damn it’s funny. I love Throw Momma From the Train.
Showcasing Danny DeVito's immense talents both as an actor and as a filmmaker, Throw Momma from the Train is a dark comedy that's as pitch-black as it is wildly hilarious, with wonderful performances, terrific chemistry between DeVito and Billy Crystal, stylish cinematography, creative and energetic direction, memorable characters, and snappy writing.
Largely sort of labored (in part the fault of a wheezing, stupid Billy Crystal) even while it exemplifies De Vito's preferred nails-on-chalkboard style of black comedy (seeds of the much more successfully vicious WAR OF THE ROSES are planted here). Barry Sonnenfeld MVP, although Anne Ramsey shouting is never not funny.
This was viewed alongside my rewatch of Strangers on a Train last night at the recommendation of Remobo, and it is quite a nice pairing, getting a glimpse in how the modern comedy pays homage to the original in a multiplicity of ways. Danny Devito and Billy Crystal make great onscreen chemistry alongside the ruff n' gruff mother figure played by Anne Ramsey.
The modernization of not only the famous plot point from Strangers on a Train but on many of the Hitchcock tropes is apparent, most obviously is the matriarch who has an overbearing grip or presence on their offspring.
