When should Christen Press and Tobin Heath return?

I've seen Press do some rehab on her social media but don't know where she stands with her ACL recovery. I haven't heard much from Tobin or what she's trying to do. I'm not expecting much except maybe a late appearance for a couple of games if they're lucky. They've both just kind of disappeared from the soccer world.

It’s “comeback season” for Press

Who knows about Heath, but she’s been a FA for almost 2 years and seems very content doing her re stuff and supporting CP rather than looking for a contract anywhere.

Which I do find crazy re: Heath. She was and is almost inseparable with a ball on her foot. But maybe she aint for playing competitive soccer anymore?

Nothing wrong with that, some people play too long and then the injuries cause them lifetime pain

Former Mavs player Dirk Nowitzki said that he wishes he’d retired a few seasons earlier because now he can’t do much physical activities with his kids. Former Eagles player Jason Kelce couldn’t do some things with his kids due to all the pain in his doco-series too. Heath ended her 2020 season with United early due to injury, her 2021 season with Arsenal early due to injury and her 2022 season with Reign early due to injury. It would make sense if she’s decided the injuries aren’t worth the future of pain.

Don’t get me started on Nadal.

I’ve been very cautiously optimistic in the last few weeks, Press and the club itself have been a lot less wishy washy about her situation and do seem to be very happy with her progress lately compared to last year. I’m excited to see her back on the pitch.

Top left pic looked like Press was hopping on a pogo stick until I zoomed in.

Heath is likely low key retired. Press is training with ACFC (which I’m very excited with since she’s one of my fave players).

u/Lookingfortomboys avatar

I know she’s not one for pomp and circumstance, but I wish we could’ve given her a send off ceremony

Press is back with the team, she and ACFC have been posting her progress. She’s probably 2 months away from games assuming no further problems. After players are back in team training it usually takes them 6 weeks minimum before getting game time.

Heath hasn’t said anything but I find it very hard to believe she’s not retired.

I think it was in one of the recap shows that tobin very briefly talked about her status, which iirc wasn't really an update so much as a reflection. the thing that stuck out to me the most was how affected she was by being let go by portland and the way that all went down. she couldn't even really speak on it at all without choking up and had every intention of playing at portland until her retirement. not really an answer to your question but it has stuck with me since and idk my read on it was that that whole mess just left her feeling like she doesn't have a team of her own that she feels a part of, and I wouldn't be surprised if all that left her unmotivated to get fit and join another team. she only did short stints at reign/arsenal in preparation for the last olympics. I would literally lose my shit if we ever got to see tobin play again

::knocks on ikea particle board::

Press is back on grass training with the team now according to social media posts and at some point during this season, she is set to come back to the field.

I don't know if Tobin Heath has given an update as to whether she wants to continue playing professionally or not but she hasn't played in a few years now(I think she was last with Seattle Reign back in 2022?) She is active doing other things and it's totally possible as another commenter said that she's low key retired.

Christen Press should be back soon, which is amazing although I’m just a little annoyed our home game against them wasn’t in the second half of the season so I could see her live.

Heath is signing with Houston to be Sanchez’ replacement retired. It would be funny if it was the first option though

Dang I’m disappointed in myself for not going with Re-tired haha

It appears Press should be back soon, which I’m very excited about 🥳

I think Heath not being protected by Portland then Louisville keeping her rights and their predator coach shitting on them to the media changed the course of Heath’s NWSL career. It seemed like that Reign stint was because she wanted to be closer to Press on the West Coast but then she got inured again so decided to hang the boots up. It’s a shame, it sounded like she would’ve retired in Portland and never gone to Arsenal/Reign if not for that course of events.

Forever still upset that whole ordeal took place. Justice for Tobin

Christen said in an episode that they have both been rehabbing knee injuries. Christen has made it clear that she’s coming back but it’s a whole toss up on if Tobin returns or not. Her absolute refusal to say anything on the matter is what gives me pause. A quiet goodbye is one thing but this is a whole other. Christen has tried to get her to talk about it. She said Tobin is in her “rehab era.” At this point I think it’s safe to say Tobin wasn’t able to get back to full health after this injury.

Edit: Allie Long also just said in her stream with Tobin that we all need to manifest a return for both of them and for them to play on the same team. This strikes me as an odd thing to say especially if she knows her friend has retired. But it could’ve just been wishful thinking on her part rather than something she actually sees as a possibility.

Heath looks to be in most of Press’ rehab pictures but chances are she’s just there to be supportive and to do general rehab not rehab to get back to playing again these days.

Allie Long coming back is surprising because wasn’t she training with Utah for a while then didn’t make the cut?

Edited

Yeah Long said in the stream that she’s “in hiding” until she is able to play again. It makes me wonder if that’s the situation with Heath as well given her total lack of silence on the matter. Also, yes, Long was training with Utah and then nothing seemed to come of it.

I talked to someone who said they frequent the same facility that Heath and Press rehab at. They said sometimes they rehab together and sometimes separately. Given everything Press has shared with us about Heath, it seems she is genuinely rehabbing her own injury and not just going to support CP. But her end goal could just be to be fit rather than come back to play.

Press said in an interview with Julie Foudy at ACFC’s home opener that they discovered her body develops scar tissue a lot faster than normal, it helped her stay so injury free for her career but getting her first major injury with an ACL it has hindered her progress. That explains the scopes, and I thought the timing of her telling fans that was interesting. To me it sounded like they figured that out late, after the first couple scopes and that last scope it finally clicked. Now as a result, she’s finally back with the team for the first time and seemingly has passed the stage that kept giving her trouble last year.

The only time we will see Heath near an NWSL pitch again will be when Press is back on the field in my opinion. She’s retired in every way but a public announcement.

They haven’t completely disappeared from the soccer world, through re-inc they do watch alongs with Tobin and other players (Allie Long, MA Vignola) and have a podcast. Apparently they want to bring their World Cup format back for the Olympics. I wished they kept up with their more casual podcast although that stopping coincided with Press finally being back with the team so I’ll happy take no podcast for CP being back on the pitch.

Press is probably looking at games around the Mexico tournament during the Olympics break, potentially earlier than that but that would only occur if she’s starting training within the team very soon. Heath is basically a WAG, she’s clearly retired imo.

u/Practical_Teacher_98 avatar

Heath will never play pro ball again. I hope Press can get to where she wants to be and plays out the rest of her career injury free.

u/SarahAlicia avatar

Tobin is not returning.

Christen is one of my favorite players. I hope she makes a great return to the field! I’m so happy to see her training with ACFC and can’t wait to see her comeback

Playing at 35+ is pretty unusual. People see Marta or Sinc doing it and think it's normal but most players retire in their early 30s. I see Alex Morgan retiring after the olympics for example, right after she turns 35. Heath is turning 36 in a few weeks. She had a long career.

LOL at the downvotes. Are facts that hard to digest? Look at the average age of retiring players.

u/Old-Hovercraft7204 avatar

Formiga is still playing at 46

Alex isn’t retiring after the Olympics lol, cut from the national team? Yes, but that would’ve been the case before the Olympics if not for Fishel’s injury anyway. She’s very committed to San Diego and will keep playing until at least the end of this season, and more likely til the end of next season.

The likelihood of her having another kid is greater than her re-signing for another wave season in the near future. I seriously doubt she tries to come back after that. She'll probably finish this Wave season, sure. Her contract expires this year.

She’ll have another kid after she retires she and her husband do want to supposedly, but I don’t think she’ll retire after the Olympics which is what you said… she’s committed to SD, just because she’ll be cut from the NT doesn’t mean she won’t still play club.

u/Ill-Donut-8391 avatar

I obviously meant she would probably retire after this season. The NWSL season ends like two months after the olympics. It's not like it gets easier to get pregnant as you age 35+

Tobin is 35. She’s gone.

u/Hot-Effect-986 avatar

Marta, Sinc and Becky are older. It’s not about age more than it is about the fact that she is seemingly happy retired. I’d say the injury history is more the reason than age, she ended the last 3 seasons in her career early due to injury. Add onto that the last two of those seasons she had to play away from Christen because Louisville didn’t trade her rights/FA didn’t exist yet it makes sense players in her position prefer to be with their family/SO and not want the injuries.

u/Mentalfloss1 avatar

Sinc is my all-time favorite. I’ve watched live starting in her freshman year. But she’s no longer fast, quick, or very clever though. It’s hard to watch her now.

Becky is wonderful but a faster player will embarrass her badly.

Marta is incredible.

And yes, repeated injuries + age have sunk Heath.

u/Hot-Effect-986 avatar

Yeah some players play til the wheels fall off, and that’s okay. As long as a team is willing to give them a contract they are entitled to play. Thats why it’s not so much as Heath’s age, it’s that she doesn’t seem to want to play anymore. I think a team would give her a contract, she’s marketable and can give you a game winner off the bench when needed. Reign wanted to keep her in 2023 and she declined the option, ACFC’s former scout said on her Twitter account they were in contact but Heath didn’t want to make a final decision until she was fully fit. Reading between the lines it seems she would’ve played for LA if she was able, but ultimately didn’t think it was worth it due to injuries.

u/Mentalfloss1 avatar

From my downvotes, some can’t handle reality. Oh well.

I am so confused about Marta. After the World Cup she made her statement about stepping down and it being her last World Cup and there were dozens of headlines about her retirement. Yet she is still playing in the NWSL and for Brazil’s women’s team. I am so confused!

I’d be very surprised if we ever see either of them play competitively again.

Press looks like she’s coming back, and LAFC seems to be confident enough that they’re now posting her updates on their own social media again too. Level of play is TBD, but I think she’ll have her debut this season.

Edit: ACFC not LAFC sorry

u/Double_Tap_2331 avatar

seems like we will see press this season

I said what I said.

u/Square-Newspaper-700 avatar

Why do you think  Press wouldn't  be back? She showing some progress

u/Practical_Teacher_98 avatar

4 surgeries on one knee after one injury is a very very bad sign. Look at Sam mewis, and she is significantly younger than press.
