Magda Chambriard, nominated to take the helm of Petrobras, is an experienced professional in the oil and gas sector and had already been considered for the presidency of the state-owned company during one of the crises between the now-former CEO Jean Paul Prates and Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira.

Ms. Chambriard is well-connected within the Lula administration and was part of the transition team that worked between the election and inauguration. She served as a consultant for the energy and petroleum sectors during the transition. In the latter field, she has over 40 years of experience, with significant contributions to key moments in the regulation of pre-salt exploration and production, for instance.

A civil engineer graduated from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) with a postgraduate degree in chemical engineering from Coppe-UFRJ, Ms. Chambriard joined Petrobras in 1980, where she worked in the production area.

In 2002, she was a business consultant for Exploration and Production in the New E&P Business area of Petrobras when she was seconded to the National Petroleum Agency (ANP). At the regulator, she took on the role of advisor in the exploration and production department.

In 2008, she became a director at ANP, and in 2012, she succeeded Haroldo Lima as the general director. At the regulatory agency, she spearheaded the creation of the Superintendency of Safety and Environment and the Superintendency of Information Technology.

Ms. Chambriard also oversaw technical studies that led to the first pre-salt bidding round and the traditional concession regime bidding rounds. She was part of the regulator’s board throughout the process that culminated in the establishment of the production-sharing regime for pre-salt oil fields.

At ANP, she engaged with various areas, including auditing, bidding promotion, legal issues, supplies, fuel distribution and retail, human resources, governmental relations, and exploration and production, among other segments.

Before being considered for the leadership of Petrobras, she was the director of the Fiscal Advisory Board of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro and a co-founder of Chambriard Consulting, specializing in the oil and gas sector. Ms. Chambriard was contacted for comment but did not respond.
