Product Description
"The girl is hot," the Motion Picture Herald's critic wrote about Lana Turner's performance in this film. "No holds barred and no conditions stipulated." Turner stars with Clark Gable in this wartime romantic drama. Pearl Harbor is about to be bombed and crack reporter Jonny Davis (Gable) has just returned from the Pacific. At his old rooming house, Davis meets fellow reporter Paula Lane (Turner), a girl he once knew who never got over him. Now, she's involved with Davis's clean-cut younger brother Kirk (Robert Sterling). But Paula wasn't meant to settle, and Jonny's passion for her is equally fervent. Hoping he'll forget her, Jonny persuades Paula to take an assignment in Indochina. But she disappears there -- and Jonny and Kirk are sent to search for her. What they find changes everything.

THE SCRIPT IS A PREDICTABLE FORMULA BUT STILL ENGAGING.
"Somewhere I'll Find You" actually starts a couple of months before the war. Since Japan and the United States were engaged in peace talks, many people believed the United States could avoid war. Some even joked about it. After all, how could a tiny country like Japan attack the mighty United States? George L. Stafford (Charles Dingle), newspaper editor, certainly doesn't believe there will be a war. And when foreign correspondent Jonny Davis (Clark Gable) keeps sending him stories about Japan preparing for war, he refuses to print them. By switching the discs on the recording machine and doing some fancy editing of Stafford's remarks, the paper publishes a story that is just the opposite of what Stafford intends. Helping him along is Junior Davis (Robert Sterling), Jonny's kid brother.
By the way, the scene where Jonny takes all of Stafford's clothes while he's getting a massage (he's forced to cover himself with his own newspaper) is just silly and should have been cut from the picture. It's not at all funny, and besides, this is a picture about our country being attacked and going to war!
Junior Davis is in love with another employee of the paper, Paula Lane (Lana Turner). He's hoping she will marry him right away, but she has her doubts. Especially when she once again meets his brother. Jonny used to know Paula and she apparently never got over their love affair. Starting up where he left off, he immediately starts putting his moves on her. Now Clark Gable was a fine actor, but he always seemed to be matched up with someone way too young for him. In "Mogambo" he made love to Grace Kelly, who looked liked a teenager next to him. Even in "Gone With The Wind" (which Gable never wanted to do because he DIDN'T get the girl), he looked way too old for Vivian Leigh. Gable had smoked since he was a teenager, and especially when under stress, would drink heavily. He was also beginning to have serious problems with his teeth. Leigh once confessed that she dreaded the scenes in the picture where she had to kiss him, his breath was so bad!
So we have the age-old rivalry of brother vs, brother, each in love with the same girl. But owner Stafford solves that problem by sending Paula to Hanoi as a foreign correspondent. When it's discovered that she's missing, both brothers make the trip to Asia to find her. And they do. She's apparently smuggling children over the border in an Indochina that looks suspiciously like the MGM backlot.
They rescue her, and after a period of rest, she soon recovers. (By the way, I love the Chinese girl who keeps telling Paula, "You're very pretty for a white woman." But Jonny still has a story to get out, with Paula typing a mile a minute. It seems that during an invasion by the Japanese, Junior Davis was killed, presumably leaving the field clear for Jonny to marry Paula.
But the thing I like best isn't even in the picture. It's that poster at the end, which lays it all on the line. AMERICA NEEDS YOUR MONEY! BUY WAR BONDS AT THIS THEATER!
