Horizon: An American Saga, Kevin Costner’s epic Western

HORIZON: AN AMERICAN SAGA

With an all-star cast, Kevin Costner is making his return to the big screen with Horizon: An American Saga, an ambitious historical epic, structured in chapters, on how the West was won. The actor plays the lead role and is also the director, producer and co-writer.

The Western seems to have definitively become Kevin Costner’s favourite genre. Throughout his career, the actor-director has regularly hitched his wagon to it, both in front of and behind the camera, using the genre as a way of getting across his vision of America, nurtured by deeply rooted political and environmental engagements.

Unsurprisingly, it’s with a new Western, constructed in the form of a series, that the director of Dances with Wolves (1990) has returned. In Horizon: An American Saga, he depicts the periods that preceded and followed the Civil War and the conquest of the American West.

Kevin Costner has filmed this epic saga, filled with pitfalls and intrigues, through the eyes of different characters from history, from the pioneers to the Indians engaged in a fight for their survival. With the breathtaking American West as a backdrop, he asks the audience to meditate on the barbarism of man.

The project, with a run time of ten hours and which has come to fruition after 35 years, is based around a mosaic of characters, portrayed – alongside Kevin Costner – by a pantheon of actors, including Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, and Will Patton.
