The series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they encounter new worlds and civilizations, delving into familiar themes and expanding upon an incident that has been talked about within the franchise's universe, but never fully explored. What to Know

      Critics Consensus

The second season of Discovery successfully -- if stubbornly -- cleans up the problematic storylines of Trek past while still effectively dramatizing new takes on the lore.

Julian D "Star Trek: Discovery's" second season embarks on a thrilling journey that seamlessly blends traditional "Trek" elements with fresh perspectives on beloved characters, truly embodying the spirit of exploration. With each episode, the series delves deeper into the complexities of its characters, offering viewers a rich tapestry of dynamic personalities and intricate relationships. The well-written dialogue and nuanced performances bring these characters to life, making their growth and interactions both captivating and relatable. One of the show's standout qualities is its exploration of psychological themes, particularly the profound impact of trauma on individuals and society as a whole. Through compelling storytelling, "Star Trek: Discovery" delves into the depths of personal and intergenerational trauma, offering thought-provoking insights into the human condition. As the series progresses, it becomes clear that "Star Trek: Discovery" is charting a course back to the core principles of exploration and discovery that have defined the franchise for decades. While the path may be gentler, the sense of adventure is no less exhilarating, as the crew boldly ventures into uncharted territory, unafraid to confront new challenges and embrace the unknown. Overall, "Star Trek: Discovery" is a must-watch for fans old and new, offering a compelling blend of classic "Trek" adventure and innovative storytelling. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/10/24 Full Review Travis C Introducing a tonal shift and Anson Mount made Discovery so much better! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Wayne L The introduction of the OG Enterprise crew with Captain Pike is a cool story mechanic and the story arc is engaging. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/09/24 Full Review Antihrist P If I could give it 0 starts, I'd do it. This whole show was simply a cheesy B-level series with too much budget thrown into it - and the money didn't help. First of all, the most memorable impression after watching it is the amount of crying which would put Latin telenovelas at shame. It desperately tries to be emotional, but fails horribly. Maybe because the acting is so bad that you simply can not connect to any of the characters. Maybe because the plot is all over the place with no clear direction and suffers from a severe case of deus ex machina extravaganza. Maybe because characters die and are being revived on a whim of the authors, making all of the emotional charge completely pointless. Or maybe it's because a lot of the crying and "emotions" is forced and completely out of place. And that's all only if you watch it as a stand-alone show. If you watch it as Star Trek - oh, man... Where to even begin. First of all, the authors of this overblown telenovela had the audacity to literally end the Federation, in the most blatant and dumb way possible. That's just disrespectful to generations who grew up with Star Trek which the authors of this junk simple didn't have right to. Second, but not less important, it has no connection whatsoever to what Start Trek really is. It really looks like the authors hated Star Trek universe so much that they were ready to blow insane amounts of money just to ruin the whole universe and everything it represents. I would not recommend it to anyone. Even if you are not a Star Trek fan, this show is objectively really bad in all of its aspects - even if you watch it as a stand-alone show outside of the official Star Trek universe. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/10/23 Full Review Post-Apocalyptic T The people giving this one star are the same people who use the term "woke agenda" on a regular basis. For them, the "woke agenda" includes any TV show/movie that has characters who are not white, not straight, or characters in interracial relationships. If this describes you, just skip the show because you're going to write some nonsense review about how nobody cares about "American values" anymore. I'm going to leave this review for every season. This is such a fantastic show, but some people just really hate the fact that it's no longer 1950. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/13/23 Full Review Atif S Worse than S1, STD S2 is continuation of the same themes. However lazy writing where everything revolves around Burnham starts to become boring. But it does have Cpt. Pike and sets up ST:SNW, so it's not all bad. S3 however, oof.. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/25/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
