Vieux Lyon, or Old Town Lyon, is a treasure trove of historical sites, stunning architecture, and unique activities. It’s made up of three sections: Saint-Paul to the north, central Saint-Jean, and Saint-Georges to the south.
From hilltop views to ancient ruins and mouthwatering Lyonnais cuisine, you’re sure to find something that you’ll love in this charming historic neighborhood.

1. Take a Food Tour in Vieux Lyon
Lyon is known as the capital of gastronomy in France, and Vieux Lyon is filled with amazing places to sample Lyon’s signature dishes.
Indulge in savory dishes like quenelles and locally produced cheeses and sausages (and maybe even some local wine). Satisfy your sweet tooth with decadent pastries, delicious chocolates, or a slice of tarte aux pralines (a local favorite!).
Taking a food tour on your first day in a city is a great way to start your trip. Not only will you sample delicious cuisine, but you’ll get insider tips on where to eat while you’re in Lyon.

2. Ride the Funicular up Fourvière Hill
When visiting Vieux Lyon, I like to start from the top of Fourvière Hill and work my way down.
While you certainly can climb up, I like to take the funicular (cable car) to the top of the hill. It’s much faster, easier, and more fun! (Plus, I’m a little bit lazy..)
There are two funicular routes to choose from. One will take you right to the basilica, and the other ends near the Roman ruins and Lugdunum Museum.
Ride the funicular railway to the top of Fourvière Hill. Even if you don’t want to tour the basilica, this is one of the best photo spots in Lyon. You’ll love the panoramic views of Lyon!

3. Admire the Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica
Behold the stunning architecture of the Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica. It’s one of the top attractions in Lyon, and an important religious French landmark.
The basilica is lovingly nicknamed the ‘upside-down elephant’ due to its four large towers sticking up into the sky.
The stained-glass windows are gorgeous, and the intricate gilded mosaics decorating the basilica walls are phenomenal.
If you have the Lyon City Pass, you can take a free guided rooftop tour of the basilica. I did this on my last trip to Lyon, and it was fantastic! (Warning: there are a lot of stairs involved in this tour!)
4. Explore Lyon’s Roman Ruins
Lyon was founded in 43 BC by the Romans. At the time it was named Lugdunum, and over the centuries this name evolved into ‘Lyon’.
Lugdunum was one of the most important French cities in Roman times. (A fun fact about France is that, for the Romans, Lyon was more important than Paris!)
Discover Lyon’s past with a visit to the ancient Roman ruins. On the slope of Fourvière Hill are some of Lyon’s most well-preserved Roman structures, the Gallo-Roman Theater and Odeon. Plus, you can explore Lyon’s Roman ruins for free!
If you’re visiting Lyon in summertime, don’t miss Les Nuits de Fourvière. Fourvière Nights is an amazing festival, with performances held right here in the ruins of the Roman theater!

5. Learn about Roman History at the Lugdunum Museum
The Lugdunum Museum (formerly the Gallo-Roman Museum) will take you on a journey through Lyon’s history, starting in Roman times.
The Ludgunum Museum is one of the best museums in Lyon. Its vast collection of artifacts and interactive exhibits are informative and engaging.
One of the most interesting things about this museum is its architecture.
You start at the top of the museum and spiral down through the exhibits. The museum is embedded in the side of the hill, with vast windows looking out over the amphitheater ruins. Pretty cool, right?
6. Eat Pastries at the Boulangerie du Palais
I have a major sweet tooth, and so I’m in heaven whenever I visit Lyon. I can honestly say that some of the best French pastries I’ve ever eaten were in Lyon.
Indulge in mouth-watering French pastries at the renowned Boulangerie du Palais, located in the heart of Old Lyon.
There is pretty much always a line here, so you know the food is amazing! But don’t worry, it moves pretty quickly.
Try some pastries made with Lyon’s signature praline rose (pink caramelized almonds), or enjoy a sandwich or a slice of pizza for a quick lunch.
Your taste buds will thank you!
7. Explore the Vieux Lyon Traboules
One of Lyon’s unique attractions is the network of traboules. These are, literally, secret passageways within the city. They were used in Lyon’s silk industry and also by the French Resistance during WWII.
Most traboules can be found in Old Lyon. Keep your eyes open as you’re walking along Rue-Saint Jean, and you’ll probably find some. My favorites open into beautiful courtyards!
Many traboules are open to the public, including ‘La Longue Traboule’ (the longest traboule). Look for placards on the walls of the buildings marking the public traboules.
I had a good time searching for the passageways on my own. I also enjoyed taking a guided Vieux Lyon traboules tour, to learn more about their history. (And to find the ones I kept missing!)

8. Visit the Cinema and Miniatures Museum
As you explore Vieux Lyon, you’re sure to pass by the entrance to the Cinema and Miniatures Museum.
On our first visit to Lyon, we ducked in here to escape a sudden rainstorm, and we’re glad we did!
The Cinema and Miniatures Museum is a unique combination of two museums – a little bit odd, but a fun visit.
Film buffs will enjoy seeing props and special effects from blockbuster films like Pirates of the Caribbean and Alien. And the top floor is filled with intricate miniature scenes that will pique your curiosity.
9. See the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral
You can’t miss the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste. It’s located right in the center of Vieux Lyon, in Place Saint-Jean.
(Place Saint-Jean is a popular meeting point, so if you’re taking a tour in Vieux Lyon, you’ll probably meet here.)
Don’t just admire the stunning architecture of the Saint-Jean Cathedral – you’ll definitely want to go inside.
In addition to a gorgeous stained-glass window, this cathedral houses a remarkable astronomical clock. And take a peek into the Treasury, one of the hidden gems of Lyon!
10. Eat at a Traditional Lyonnais Bouchon
Even if you only have one day in Lyon, you’ll want to have a meal at one of Lyon’s traditional bouchons.
Bouchons serve up hearty, meat-centric dishes. Enjoy quenelles (fish dumplings in a seafood sauce), or hearty sausages. If you’re a picky eater, do a little homework on the menu!
When I travel, I like to have my big meal at lunchtime to rest my feet a bit and fuel up for another round of sightseeing in the afternoon. (Plus, prices are usually better at lunchtime! Look for prix-fixe menus for the best value.)

11. Learn about the Guignol Puppet
As you wander the cobbled streets in Vieux Lyon, I’m sure you’ll notice a surprising number of puppets.
Guignol, a beloved French puppet character, first appeared in Lyon.
You can learn about Guignol and his friends at the Guignol Museum. Or find out more about the puppetry arts at the World Puppet Museum (housed in the Musées Gadagne).
The young and the young at heart can enjoy a puppet show in various places around the city, including La Maison de Guignol in Vieux Lyon.
12. See the Saint George Church
In the southern portion of Vieux Lyon, don’t miss the Église Saint Georges de Lyon.
At 67 meters tall, the church’s spire draws the eye (especially if you’re approaching crossing the river).
But my favorite part is the carving of St. George battling the dragon, inscribed above the doors to the church.
Fun fact: the Saint-Georges Church was designed by architect Pierre Bossan, who also designed the Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica.

13. Walk along the Banks of the Saône River
Be sure take a walk along the quay of the Saône. The Rhône and Saône rivers are an important part of Lyon’s history, as trade was conducted by the rivers.
From the quay, take in stunning views of Lyon’s churches, as well as the neoclassical Cour d’Appel. You can even spy Lyon’s hilltop basilica in the distance.
Across the river is Lyon’s bustling Presqu’île. Avoid traffic and cross using Lyon’s pedestrian bridges: Passerelle du Palais-de-Justice or the Passerelle Saint Georges.
On the Vieux Lyon side of the Passerelle du Palais-de-Justice is this statue. And on the other side is the ticket office for sightseeing Lyon river cruises (they’re one of my favorite ways to see the city!).
Get your Lyon river cruise ticket! It’s a great way to see the sights of Lyon without the workout.
