VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß will have to make do without Nikolas Nartey, Dan-Axel Zagadou (both recovering from knee injuries), Josha Vagnoman, Lilian Egloff and Roberto Massimo (all injured) against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday afternoon.
Hoeneß’s charges may have already booked their place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, but the Cannstatt boys still have something to play for on the final day. “We really want to finish second,” said the VfB boss. “It’s out of our hands, but we want to do a thorough job in our final home match and take the game seriously. We also want to make VfB history by finishing with 71 or, ideally, 73 points. We want to finish the campaign on a high on home soil in front of our unbelievable fans. That’s what motivates us and makes us go the extra mile. Ultimately, we want to have fun again tomorrow, play well and win – alongside our fans in the stadium. To do that, we need to do the basics right, stay focused and get the three points.”
In Gladbach, VfB are up against a side who have beaten them twice this term – in a pre-season tournament in Heimstetten (5-1) and in the reverse fixture earlier this season (3-1). “Gladbach have already secured survival, but they’ll also take the game very seriously,” continued Hoeneß. “They’ve beaten us twice already, too. It would be fatal to start playing mind games or to underestimate our opponents. Gladbach have good footballers in their ranks, they’re strong in transition, and they have great individual quality and technical skill. It’s going to be a real test for us tomorrow. We want to end the season successfully and I hope we’re in for an enjoyable afternoon of football.”
