Downton Place

Season 3 Spoilers

Did anyone else really want to see more of this place?? It was such a beautiful blip on the radar, I wish this setting could've been used more thoroughly, or in one of the films for something. I'd love it to have a return if the supposed Season 7 happened, but I don't think they're going to actually continue the Series, and instead will close the Downton journey with the third upcoming film.

(Didn't know if this counted as a spoiler so I marked it just in case)

Whenever I rewatch this episode, I always laugh and roll my eyes when they complain about how small it is and how it would be impossible for the family to properly fit.

I know! Tom's like, "You do realize that for most people it looks like a fairy palace." YES IT DOES AND I'LL TAKE IT!

I bet it's the same size has loxley.

Only 8 servants. Quelle horreur!

Hi, friend.

Hello!!!

Yes. They carried on as if was a tired little bungalow. It would be interesting to see the inside. I had read, perhaps in the script book, that Highclere Castle is not as large as it appears from the outside, so it would be interesting to get a look at “Downton Place.”

*nervous laughter* hehe so small

*pretends my house is bigger than 750sqft*

….that’s the joke.

Definitely YES. I would damn near kill to own a gorgeous house like that.

Same. I know we only see the outside, but I'd far prefer to live there over the Abbey, personally.

The exercise alone you get when walking up and down the stairs to change between every meal. Not even a servant walking from the attic to the basement, but a member of the family... I'd prefer long walks & riding as exercise over these endless hallways in the long run

Did they let other people rent it or was it just empty? Did they just have a full manor house laying around like that?

It seems to me that these "extra" houses formed part of the overall estate, and would be used for various "getaway" things. Otherwise, it would sit empty until the next time the family visited. Perhaps there'd be a groundskeeper or small staff on site to keep things in check. In some cases, a family member may be permitted to live there if needed (like the Dower House, or Crawley House).

Violet said of "Downton Place" something along the lines of, "My husband would open the grounds for shooting and sometimes we'd have lunch in the house. I wouldn't think it was good for much else."

It came with Robert's Great Grandmother, he rents it to a tenant but he says, "We can come to an arrangement that keeps him happy". I can't imagine being happy to leave such a lovely location!

They kept the shooting there.

You know, priorities. 😂

I think the tenant rented some of the land

Oh I assumed it was the house because Matthew asks "Who lives there now?"

Maybe I'm miss remembering the scene. It is odd that if someone is living there, they are having a picnic on their tennants lawn.😂

They had a tenant, who clearly didn't mind them just showing up with a picnic and a party at any given time.

They could have at least brought them lunch. 😂

That’s wild, imagine your landlord randomly showing up and hosting a bbq in your backyard

I used to live in a house next to the football stadium of the major-SEC University I attended. My landlord would rent out spaces on my lawn for tailgating. Because of where my bedroom was located, I would wake up at 8am, after working until 3am, to a car pulling up literally 2 inches from my bedroom window to start their tailgates. Luckily I can sleep through general noise.

I believed there was a tenant..not like the Drewes' kind of tenant, obviously. But if I recall correctly Robert said they could come to some kind of arrangement with the tenant. That said, if I'm right and there was a tenant there, how did the Crawleys just decide to host a picnic in the middle of the grounds? Wouldn't that be a little awkward for the tenants? I mean how long before they were inside specing out where to put the red sofa?

“Lord Grantham! Do what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Oh yeah we might have to move into your home, you don’t mind do you?”

😆

And their version of a "picnic" compared to the downstairs staff picnics lol

I brought beer!

"I AM racy!"

That line always cracks me up XD

Me too!

That and when she tells him she bought a garter in France. It's so cute.

The angle of the pic makes it look like it is curved. Odd.

I was wondering if it was leaning.

Just beautiful! I wonder if perhaps they didn't have permission to film inside. I would so have loved to see more.

I just read about in on Wikipedia, apparently Ian Fleming’s mum used to live there

In efforts to further diversify their holdings I could see them turning some of their land into a very exclusive county club and this would serve as the clubhouse.

I bet this place would have been a lot warmer…

Btw couldn’t they sell this place when they were having serious money troubles? Maybe along with the London house since they usually just crashed at Rosamund’s place anyway? Idk if it maybe was enough for the full financial issue to be resolved but surely it could have helped them keep Downton for at least a longer time. Or couldn’t the other properties be sold separate from Downton because of the entail?

What a shabby little cottage. You couldn’t pay me to live there. What would they think in Town?

u/eastmemphisguy avatar

Here's the real house where they filmed. It's open to the public for tours. Wish I lived closer. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greys_Court

TBF the one bedroom they need to film in would fit in there.

"How lovely!"

I always wondered if their tenant was like "what's up with these random people having a party on my lawn? 😂

I mean, they just kind of decided and showed up.

How lovely ☺️

Is it me, or is the front part of the house listing?

It looks bigger than the abbey. Maybe that's just me
