The Russian Crown Prince Arriving in Kyoto, 1891

Comments - Interesting depiction of the Russian Crown Prince Nicholas arriving at the train station in Kyoto during a visit to Japan. He stands in the center wearing a red uniform and helmet, his chest covered with a sash and medals. The Emperor and Empress and a group of dignitaries are gathered to greet him, the men in black uniforms and the ladies wearing the latest Western fashions. Fireworks explode in the sky at upper left, and strings of red lanterns and flags add to the festive air. Later during a day trip to Lake Biwa, one of the Japanese guards escorting the Prince attempted to assassinate him with a sword, slashing his face before the Prince's cousin Prince George of Greece and Denmark blocked a second blow, saving the prince's life. An unusual historic scene.
