Great writing/acting

I’ve been in serious binge mode, out of work for a month or so and getting a bit stir crazy. Any suggestions for truly quality series (on par with Deadwood, Breaking Bad/Saul, Mr Robot, Sopranos, The Wire, Twin Peaks/Return, GOT/HOTD, Hannibal, True Detective, Mindhunter etc.) I feel like I’ve seen everything but know that can’t be true. One caveat, I’ve only got Max and Netflix for paid streaming, then the usual free streamers Tubi, Roku. No Apple TV which is a shame bc I hear Severance is good.. anyway you get the picture. Thanks 🙏🏻

Dark, Six Feet Under, The Leftovers, Succession

Thank you! I’ve seen Six feet and Succession, both excellent. I started Dark but it didn’t grab me for some reason, possibly the subtitles thing, I should go try again. I don’t think I’ve tried the Leftovers, thank you for some great recs! 🙏🏻

FARGO

I’ve heard this is very good, but I don’t think I have a way to stream it on what I’ve got available to me. Thank you!

Ah shit I didnt see you didn’t list Hulu…. Well one day I’m sure it’ll make the rounds to other streaming services, but it’s not to be missed.

Every season is different, and I’ve rewatched s2 and s5 more times than I can count. Just the dialogue (hilarious and meaningful), the plot risks and “cosmic irony” the coen brothers are so good at, and the goddamn performances (esp s2) make it unlike anything else.

great acting/writing across genre (not sure of streamers):

Halt & Catch Fire

Wentworth

Downton Abbey

Suits

The Durrells of Corfu

The Affair

Thanks! I’ve seen a lot of Suits but might go back to continue.. Mad Men and Succession should’ve been on my list of already seen, both excellent, so good.. I started Wentworth but for some reason it didn’t grab me, I’ll have to try it again. I’ve not seen the rest thanks so much!

BARRY! How come no one mentioned this one, definitely one of the best written shows out there.

Oh yes I loved it. Already watched obviously.. the feral girl episode is off the charts amazing and hilarious! Good call though, thanks wish I hadn’t seen it yet!

The White Lotus

I really liked the first season, I got about half way through S2 and I just lost interest, I can’t put my finger on why. I like Aubrey Plaza too, so I don’t know why it didn’t work as well as S1 for me. Good rec though thanks!

Nah man finish it. Season 2 has a spectacular ending.

Boardwalk Empire

I liked it, loved that Buscemi finally got to carry a main role. I was bummed Michael Pitt disappeared but it was still very good thanks!

Same! Here are a few other excellent shows on Max I don't think have been mentioned:

Station Eleven

Mare of Easttown

My Brilliant Friend

The Deuce

The Great

I think station eleven was amazing but someone said that it had bad writing. I didn't notice, if it did.

The leftovers was so good. It is so haunting.

I’ve settled on Station 11 and am drawn in after only ep2, this is the kind of show I’ve been hoping for. Thanks for recommending. I like series that are thought provoking and that throw protagonists into situations that cut to the essences of human behavior. Gritty stressors that force characters to confront their true nature and psychology beneath the farcical illusions of civility that we’re forced to perform under normal daily conditions. What happens when the masks come off. Good stuff.

I’ll have to check out Station 11, I’ve not seen that 👍🏻

  • The Americans

Oh I loved the Americans, I was an 80’s kid and they did as good a job capturing that as Mad Men did with the early 60’s. I liked Mare of Easttown as well, I’ll have to check out some of your other referrals, thank you 🙏🏻

If you’re open to an Italian Mafia Crime Drama I recommend Gomorrah on HBO Max. The writing, acting, suspense, music is all up to par with any show on your list imo. Just a sidenote, I recommend watching it in its native language and use subtitles to get the full feel of the show. Hope you give it a shot.
