A Civil War veteran is amnesic after being shot in the head. When he returns to his hometown, he finds out that he has been declared a deserter. The local judge offers him a chance to clear his name, but he only wants to send him against some dangerous outlaw and his gang.

Things I enjoyed about this extremely mid spaghetti western, which has for some reason received a sparking restoration:
•William Berger's truly magnificent head of hair.
•Anthony Steffen's truly magnificent head of hair.
•Anthony Steffen being shitty to William Berger because, despite being an amnesia victim to whom Berger is being nothing but helpful, he instinctively knows that anyone played by William Berger is not to be trusted.
•The somber, dramatic score, which thinks it's attached to a much better movie.
•Raf Baldassarre's beard.
Another case of the amnesiac cowboy, and this time it’s Anthony Steffen playing Davy Flannigan, an ex-Civil War soldier accused of deserting his position and therefore burdened with a bounty on his head. With the exceptional William Berger in tow.
It seems this storytelling theme is much more common (and possibly overused) than I ever originally acknowledged, and especially in Euro Westerns.
Amnesia caused by a bullet wound to the head leaves Anthony Steffen with no memory of the past as bounty killer Davey Flanagan. But being a bounty killer has kind of trained him instinctively so he's still dangerous. With William Berger assuring Steffen he's really his friend who wants to help him but may be concealing ulterior motives. It is cool when Steffen signs a hotel ledger with the name Davey Flanagan and everyone in the town hates and fears him and he has to find out why. The cast includes Mario Brega as one of the corrupt townspeople who kind of all seem to be in on a secret and Ida Galli as Flanagan's forgotten wife. The setup of a veteran returning to find his wife and life have been stolen from him creates the proper mood of corruption and greed mixed with Steffen's sympathetic face and Berger's scheming one.
Davy Flanagan (Anthony Steffen) is a Union officer who gets shot in the head during a daring escape from a Confederate prison camp, only to lose all memory of who he was and what happened. Now accused of being a traitor with a ten thousand dollar bounty on his head, he's befriended by the shiesty Kellogg (William Berger) who informs him that he'd been double-crossed by Hackett (Claudio Undari, as Robert Hundar) who also made off with his beautiful wife, Liza (Ida Galli), who's become something of a sexy tippler in Davy's absence. Powerful ornery, with a six gun full of shells and a jug o'nitroglycerin, the amnesiac sets out to regain his memory, save his whiskey-chuggin' soak, and fill his enemies fulla lead. Standard spaghetti fare. Could have used some tastier gravy.
Der ehemalige Kopfgeldjäger und Kriegs-Deserteur Flanagan (Anthony Steffen) kehrt in seine Heimatstadt Dixon zurück. Steht inzwischen aber selbst auf der Wanted-Liste und wird von allen nur gehasst. Aufgrund einer Kriegsverletzung am Kopf kann sich der Mann aber an nichts erinnern.
Einer räudiger als der andere, juckte es mich nicht die Bohne wer schlussendlich DJANGO SPRICHT DAS NACHTGEBET überlebt oder bei den Aasgeiern landet. Selbst der Begriff Antiheld wäre für die Bagage an Mördern, Tierquälern und Falschspielern zu gut gegriffen. Der zu entschlüsselnde Background will aber bei Laune halten, der Showdown mit Sprengstoff (in Schnapspullen) hantieren und die whiskyselige Romantik mitsamt der Filmmusik durchaus ein Quäntchen OHH rausquetschen.

Solid western with a fine collection of recognizable character actors in the villain roles: William Berger, Claudio Undari and Mario Brega all show up. Ironically this story about amnesia is a bit on the forgettable side.

Not knowing much of anything at all and when he goes into town people know of him and that he’s label a deserter from war ! Now people are trying to kill him but he’s just trying to clear his name against a guy and his gang who put him in his situation ! Once Upon a Time on Letterboxd: A Western Marathon
Another by the books spaghetti western that has no right being as entertaining as it is. The story is, funnily enough, pretty forgettable but the action and the visuals and elevate what would otherwise be a very boring film. I also really like Anthony Steffen, he makes a great protagonist.
I’m starting to sound like a broken record at this point, only seven days into Western Month and I’ve already written three reviews that are virtually identical to this one.
The paint by numbers spaghetti western. Could listen to it without the actual visuals and know exactly what happened. Excellent tea kettle bullet noises. I enjoyed the small cow's brief cameo.
