      Critics Consensus

T2 Trainspotting adds an intoxicating, emotionally resonant postscript to its classic predecessor, even without fully recapturing the original's fresh, subversive thrill.

Michael Sragow Film Comment Magazine You don't have to be gloating over a wasted generation to embrace T2 Trainspotting, a confident, quirky comedy-drama that skillfully alternates bangs and whimpers. Mar 8, 2018 Full Review Matt Singer ScreenCrush The first Trainspotting was about heroin. The second is about another dangerously addictive drug: Nostalgia. Rated: 8/10 May 2, 2017 Full Review Christopher Orr The Atlantic A film nowhere near as revelatory as the original, but in some ways more satisfying, the proper closing of a tale that had been left open-ended. Mar 27, 2017 Full Review Don Shanahan Every Movie Has a Lesson Being older, but not necessarily wiser, has thinned a noticeable amount of the ferocity of the biting social commentary and dark humor that spills out of Welsh’s characters and Hodge’s screenplay. Rated: 3/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Boyle's sequel reconnects with its characters two decades later and treats them with a refreshing dose of the humanity and self-reflectivity that come with age. Rated: 4/4 Apr 4, 2022 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Like the excellent original, this worthy sequel is similarly distinguished by some memorable set-pieces, superb dialogue, and smashing performances. Jerry F After watching the first movie I definitely had to watch the next one. This is one of the not so many movies that are as good as the first, but to be honest I liked it even better. Once again very entertaining filled with great acting, plot and direction. Definitely a must watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/24 Full Review r96 s A rather good sequel! 'T2 Trainspotting' is exactly what I expected it to be. Turns out, it was also exactly what I wanted it to be. I thought it was great! I mentioned in my review of the original that I didn't like the characters, at all. Whilst that is indeed the case for that film, in this follow-up it does a grand job at making you care for the main bunch more; well, aside from Franco but we don't talk about Franco. It probably is missing out on as much substance (pardon the pun), if only when compared to the 1996 flick, but evidently I'd argue it makes up for that with improved (harsh/wrong choice of word, perhaps) characterization. Even though I only watched the other movie for the first time a mere few hours prior, it was still cracking to see Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle back together in their respective roles - aged 'n all. I appreciate both films, albeit in different ways. This one I actually 'properly' enjoyed, whereas before it was more an appreciation of how effectively it was told. Terrific productions either way, really. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/31/24 Full Review Johannes S It's a weird but uniquely touching story. It is shot amazingly beautiful. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/16/24 Full Review anubislecter For those that are fans of the first movie, they did an awesome job of showing what the characters would be like and where they would be 20 yrs later. Danny Boyle, Irvine Welsh, and John Hodge did a remarkable job of creating a sequel that could stand alone as a movie without trying to recreate or copy from the original. This movie may actually have more emotional moments than the original. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review M Q It's different story in similar style like first move, worth see, crazy, remarkable and fun. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/24 Full Review Alec C If your teenage life was harder to navigate, your adult life is a lot more complicated! Mark Renton has a near-death experience and returns to his old town and the friends he betrayed in order to find some sense in his complicated life. Mature in its storytelling and emotional at its core, this film brings us back to where things went completely wrong and questions how to make it right!
