LA VALENTINA (1938)

LA VALENTINA (1938)

Artist: unknown

La Valentina took its title from a pre-revolutionary song that later was considered as a corrido for soldaderas (poetry song for female soldiers).  It is in fact a romantic song. In the movie, Valentina (Esperanza Baur) is the daughter of rich ranchers. Engaged to a tough man, she comes to prefer Miguel (Jorge Negrete), a revolutionary general that kidnaps her but behaves in a respectful and nicer manner towards her. The poster is a stunning romantic image of “Valentina” and the general beside the horse used to kidnap her. The design and coloring are masterful.  This is another stone lithography artwork which gives better depth and texture over photo lithography.  La Valentina is one of the most favorite stone lithographs in the Institute’s collection.
