  • Important Message from Medical Professionals in Our Community

Posted by Kelly Burkholder on 6/6/2024 11:00:00 AM

Recently, we have become aware that there are robust social media platforms encouraging teenagers and young adults to participate in cliff jumping or cliff diving. This is an extremely dangerous activity as serious injuries regularly occur because of the height of the fall into the water. Many people think jumping into water would not hurt but based on the surface tension of water, jumping from high distances can mimic a landing on concrete.

Here in Lancaster County, there have been drownings related to cliff jumping or diving. There is nothing remotely safe about cliff jumping or diving into the Susquehanna River. Most areas require trespassing on private land and crossing very active train tracks. The height of the cliffs can be 30 feet or higher. The Susquehanna River has wide variations in depth due to the presence of a hydroelectric dam. There are also many submerged objects to strike or get trapped in when diving, which can lead to serious injury and death. The water temperature in early summer can be deceptively colder than the external environment, leading to severe physical impairment and hypothermia.

Please help pass this information on to keep the members of our community safe.

  • Hello Summer!

Posted by Kelly Burkholder on 5/29/2024 4:00:00 PM

Our last week at MES was a busy one, for sure. We started the week with a beach party. Students participated in outdoor activities such as beach volleyball, yard games, bubbles, and corn hole and had a great time. The third-grade students marked the end of the school year with a grand celebration dance party in the hall. It was a joyous occasion filled with laughter and dance moves. Finally, we celebrated the achievements of our sixth-grade students at their award ceremony, recognizing their hard work and the start of a new chapter in middle school.

Our celebrations, filled with joy and success, owe a great deal to the unwavering support of our PTO parents. We want to thank those who have selflessly served on the PTO board. A special mention goes to Lori Layton and Shannon Douglas, whose leadership on our board has been invaluable. Your dedication and commitment are truly appreciated. We appreciate the five years you both served on the PTO.

In our continuous effort to enhance communication with our school community, we have shared school news and updates via the eNews blast. We value your feedback and would greatly appreciate it if you could complete the brief survey attached. Your insights are crucial in helping us improve our home/school communications. Thank you for your time and contribution.

Have a safe and wonderful summer. We will send more MES-specific updates in July.

    Sincerely,
    Dr. Kain

iPads and chargers are being collected from students currently in grades K, 3, 6, 9, and 12. These iPads are being replaced over the summer and must be turned in. If you have a student in one of these grades, please know that these devices and chargers are being collected throughout this week. Apple iPads, charging blocks, charging cables and iPad cases in these grade levels must be turned in. (Students in ESY or Summer School do NOT need to turn in their iPad until the program is completed in August.)

Grade 12 Collection: Tuesday, May 21, 7:30am-9am – PAC Lobby

Grade 9 Collection: Wednesday, May 22 through Friday, May 24 – HHS Commons and PAC Lobby

Grades K, 3, 6 Collection: Wednesday, May 22 through Friday, May 24 – student homeroom

    Grades 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 11

Students in these grade levels have the option to turn in their iPad or keep it at home for use this summer. The district will collect iPads from students who wish to turn them in for summer storage this week (May 22-May 24). Chargers should remain at home for use next school year and will NOT be collected if a student is turning in their iPad for the summer. Students who turn in the iPad for the summer will receive the iPad in their new homeroom at the start of the 2024-2025 school year.

Please contact the Technology Office at 717-898-5596 for any iPad related questions over the summer.
