What Did Kevin Williamson Say About A New Trilogy Starring Neve Campbell?

Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott in Scream

In 2023, Kevin Williamson talked about his ideas for a Scream trilogy in an interview on the Happy Horror Time podcast. In the past, Williamson praised Scream 6 and Williamson said what he wanted for Scream 4, Scream (2022), and Scream 6. According to IndieWire, Williamson shared his plot ideas if he had written the fourth, fifth, and sixth movies. He said:

“‘Scream IV,’ ‘V,’ and ‘VI,’ would have been [about] the love story of Sidney Prescott, and it would’ve been this whole thing of she’s falling in love, she’s going to get married, it’s all based around her marriage when these murders start happening again."

He continued:

"It’s like, is this man that she’s in love with the killer again? Is she Billy Loomis-ing herself all over again? Is she still making the wrong decisions? Is she still choosing the bad guy?”

While it's unclear who Sidney Prescott would have been married to in this trilogy, Kevin Williamson's ideas are compelling to hear and might suggest a detail of Scream 7. Since fans already think that Scream 7 will have high stakes for Sidney because she has a family and is protecting more than just herself, it sounds like the sequel could definitely have several scenes about Sidney's personal life.

Although Kevin Williamson wrote many Scream movies, he isn't the screenwriter behind Scream 7. However, he could still have some artistic input about the script, and perhaps he shared some of his trilogy ideas with the team.

Williamson has made many interesting comments about Scream over the years, including sharing that Dewey Riley (David Arquette) was going to die in Scream. Hearing that he wanted to write a trilogy about final girl Sidney's love life being ruined by Ghostface isn't confirmation that Scream 7 could be the start of a new trilogy. But it is possible. It's fun to imagine that now that both Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell are back on board, that could tell fans what the future of the slasher franchise might be like. Perhaps the next three movies could focus on Sidney raising her kids and moving to different locations hoping to move on from Ghostface once and for all while realizing that she can never truly escape.

Who Is Confirmed For Scream 7? (As Of May 2024)

  • Neve Campbell (playing Sidney Prescott)
  • Kevin Williamson (director)
  • Guy Busick (writer)
  • Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt (story by)

It's also fascinating to hear Kevin Williamson's plans for a Scream trilogy because of how different Scream 4, Scream (2022), and Scream 6 are from his ideas. Instead of focusing on Sidney's wedding and married life, Scream 4 is about Sidney returning home to Woodsboro and realizing she can't trust her cousin. Scream (2022) gives small glimpses into Sidney's life as it's clear that she has moved away and has children, but the focus is on the new characters fighting Ghostface.

Since Sidney doesn't appear in Scream 6, there is no indication of what her character has been doing in the time that has passed. Williamson's comments suggest that fans will finally learn more about how Sidney has been doing since they last saw her. While there is a debate about killing Sidney in Scream 7, fans definitely hope that she will survive given their investment in her final girl status, her strength, and her history of defeating Ghostface.

While Kevin Williamson hasn't said much about Scream 7 just yet, he did share an Instagram post about how excited hei s to be directing the horror sequel. Given that Williamson has only directed one movie, it will be interesting to see what he does with the scary and funny story. According to Entertainment Weekly, he wrote:

"It’s been nearly 30 years since my very first script, Scream, was directed by the legendary Wes Craven. I never would have predicted what it would become. Or that I would be directing the seventh installment of the franchise. I am overcome with gratitude and excitement, and I can’t wait to take this journey with Neve and the entire Scream family as we bring back Sidney Prescott in the next chapter of the Scream franchise. Thank you to all the Scream fans. You are the gift that keeps giving."

Neve Campbell is also glad that Kevin Williamson is directing Scream 7. As she wrote in an Instagram post in March 2024,

And now it’s happening, Kevin Williamson is going to direct Scream 7! This was his baby and it’s his brilliant mind that dreamt up this world. Kevin is not just an inspiration as an artist but has been a dear friend for many years. To the amazing Scream fans, I hope you are as excited as I am. See you on set @kevwilliamson."
