So, I know that Nick Lowe's "Jesus of Cool" and Dave Edmunds' "Tracks on Wax 4" were both recorded in 1978, but which was recorded first? Or were they recorded concurrently? Ditto for "Labour of Lust" and "Repeat When Necessary" in 1979. Anyone know?

That's a good question I have also wondered about.

I know "Seconds of Pleasure" was last.

    The order I recall is:
    Dave Edmunds "Get It"
    Nick Lowe "Jesus of Cool"
    Dave Edmunds "Tracks on Wax"
    Nick Lowe "Labor of Love"
    Dave Edmunds "Repeat When Necessary"
    Dave Edmunds "Twangin'"
    Rockpile "Seconds of Pleasure"

Some where in there is the Carline Carter Lp with CRY CRY CRY on it. Produced by her then husband Nick Lowe and backed by ROCKPILE....a killer Lp that I think was just reissued in the last few weeks on CD for the first Time!!!!! A true Classic.... Musical Shapes!!!! That is the title. It just came to me as I typed! :goodie: :goodie:

BRush is correct except that Seconds of Pleasure came out in the fall of 1980, while Twangin' was released in mid-1981. Also, of course, it's Labour of Lust, not Love.

Yes, Musical Shapes and (to a lesser extent) Blue Nun are basically Carlene Carter with Rockpile as her backing band. The two were released together as an import twofer 10-12 years ago.

Jesus Of Cool was probably recorded over a long period, maybe as early as '76. Labour Of Lust And Repeat were recorded at the same time. There was a documentary "The South Bank Show" that covered this. They just alternated songs! I've only heard the audio, but there are some very drunken arguments during the course of the sessions. I think these tensions lead to the eventual bust up.

Twangin' is a collection of old and new stuff. I think The Race Is On goes back to Dave's early days at Rockfield.

Musical Shapes and Blue Nun, the follow up have been on one cd for years. I think they split them for the recent issue. There are a couple of other "Rockpile" things, maybe a track on a Micky Jupp album... I can't remember. At least the live track with Robert Plant....

The sad news is after a stint with Meatloaf (for which he didn't get paid. the manager ripped them all off) and Dire Straights, Terry Williams is a total wreck. He rejoined Man for a bit. In the end they had to let him go due to his "problems". This is a real tragedy. He is such an amazing drummer, and a very nice guy. I knew him well. I'd suggest checking out any of the Man records on UA particularly Winos Rhinos And Lunatics and Slow Motion. Actually it might be worth your time investigating the whole Welsh Scene from that time... Bands like Memfis Bend, The Knees, Deke Leonard, Neutrons and more

I'm sorry to hear that about Terry Williams. He was a hell of a drummer.

The oldest track on Pure Pop/Jesus is "Rollers Show," which first came out in 1975.

I'm saddened to hear about Terry Williams. Great drummer. I saw him locally a few years ago with Man. The others took the piss out of him all night due to his association with Dire Straits.

My favorite Rockpile listening is the live boots I must admit. The King Biscuit Flower Hour 3 sided show I picked up around 1989 for $75.00. That was a lot of cash to spend on an LP for me at that time.

An amazing show at the Ritz in NYC, and it is a stunning recording! And I have four other shows, and thaey are all great too.

And that Everly Brother EP included in the Seconds of Pleasure album is wonderful. I found a UK copy back in the early 90s. The EP was pressed on styrene in the US, so finding a UK on beautiful rich real vinyl was a big deal to me. I'll bet it blows the CD away sonically.

This band has been done right by those "other" issued recordings.

Thanks to everybody except Mick J. for your comments. I'm just a geek wanting to file the CDs in the right order. It would be cool if there was a box set with every Rockpile recording in chronological order, though I suppose the label situation would impede that.

So not everything on Twangin' is a Rockpile recording?

That wasn't on the original "Jesus" LP, was it? Just added to the American "Pure Pop" LP, right?

On "The Race Is On" he was backed by the Stray Cats--"Baby Let's Play House" was from 1968.

That's right -- it was originally the B-side of "Bay City Rollers We Love You," which Lowe released under the name The Tartan Horde as a novelty single before he signed with Stiff. Why anyone at Columbia thought Lowe's U.S. debut should contain a song about the by-then-forgotten Bay City Rollers, I don't know.

Sorry. I did try and not post that facetious reply, but what can I say, I'm weak. I did really like Rockpile though, and thought that they were really terrific when I saw them backing Nick Lowe. 'So It Goes' with both Terry Williams and Dave Edmunds on drums was one of the best opening salvos that I have ever seen.

Is "Jesus Of Cool" really a Rockpile album? My pal Steve Goulding plays drums on much of it, I believe, and he wasn't a Rockpile member.

You know Steve Goulding? He's the MAN! Not only did he play for Graham Parker's Rumour, but he also played drums on the Mekons Rock & Roll album (listen to the way he carries the song "Memphis, Egypt"). What's he doing now?

Steve Goulding plays on at least three of the songs on Jesus of Cool: "So It Goes" (just Lowe and Goulding), "Marie Provost" (Lowe, Goulding, and Andrew Bodnar), and "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass" (Lowe, Goulding, Bodnar, and Bob Andrews).

That's Goulding bashing away on "Heart of the City," as well.

Terry Williams got heavily into booze, and it messed up his playing.

It sounds like it also messed up his life.

I got this info from a certain guitarist/singer/songwriter who worked with him extensively.

Ok, close enough. Those are what I call Rockpile tunes! Then Goulding played on Rockpile recordings!

I Love Rockpile. Unfortunately I never got to see them. I have seen Dave and Nick separately.
Nick's solo acoustic shows are great.

The albums of Carlene Carter were just released by http://www.woundedbird.com/ :
    - albums "Carlene Carter" and "Blue Nun" on one CD
    - albums "Two Sides To Every Woman" and "Musical Shapes" on one CD

The sound quality is better than the old Demon U.K. CD.

I don't think that it really is, but when Nick Lowe toured after that album came out it was definitely with Rockpile, although I can't now remember if they were billed as Rockpile at the time.
