For the 2024 Met Gala tonight at New York’s Museum of Metropolitan Art, the Oscar winner stepped out in an intricately detailed black ballg own custom-made by the French luxury fashion house. Featuring an off-the-shoulder fit and a billowing skirt—made with layers of black and silver lace, silk, and sparkly tulle—the gown was perfect match for the Chanel royalty.

To complement the metallic sheen of the dress, Cruz accessorized with diamond stud earrings, a large diamond ring, a sparkling necklace, and a matching bracelet, all from Chanel High Jewelry. She wore her caramel-colored hair in a tousled bob, adding a black headpiece to match her outfit. For glam, the actor opted for a brown smoky eye and a burgundy lip.
Cruz also wore Chanel last year, when she attended the Met Gala not only as a guest, but also as a co-chair alongside fellow stars Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, and tennis legend Roger Federer. To honor the theme, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” Cruz dug an incredible look out of the archives, wearing an angelic hooded sheer gown in a light mint-green hue from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 1988 couture collection.
This year’s dress code, “The Garden of Time,” is inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. The theme examines the intrinsic connection between time and natural beauty—leaving attendees to interpret this as they please.
“The Garden of Time” also complements the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” which will include about “250 objects spanning four centuries” from the institute’s vast collection, all of them “visually united by iconography related to nature, which will serve as a metaphor for the fragility and ephemerality of fashion,” according to a press release. The exhibition will feature a number of modern technologies in its display, too, “from cutting-edge tools, artificial intelligence, and computer-generated imagery to traditional formats of x-rays, video animation, light projection, and soundscapes.”
