The Other Mrs. Kennedy : An Intimate and Revealing Look at the Hidden Life of Ethel Skakel Kennedy Mass Market Paperback – May 15, 1995

She's the real power behind the Kennedy name. Now, for the first time, her secrets are exposed..

She ruthlessly mocked her sister-in-law Jacke's breathy voice and often referred to her as "the Debutante"
She kept a lengthy "enemies list" and blackballed those who she felt were disloyal or critical of the Kennedys
She turned Hickory Hill into an eerie shrine that included life-sized photos of Bobby in closets that startled visitors
She made one fo the most difficult decisions of her life when she agreed to "pull the plug" on Bobby as he lay dying after being shot by Sirhan Sirhan
She distanced herself from her own Skakel family, whose scandals exceeded those of even the Kennedys.

I really enjoyed this book. The Kennedy's are actually not a family to be admired. Ethel and Bobby had a grand total of 11 children. While Bobby was alive, it seemed as if he made more of an effort than Ethel later would. Even so, Bobby was rarely home. He was always campaigning or earlier, working as Attorney General. Once he was assassinated, the Kennedy household at their rambling Hickory Hill estate went haywire.
Ethel who had been deeply devoted and in love with her husband was angry at his loss and didn't know how to raise all of the children. The older boys bore the brunt of Ethel's rage. They developed serious problems with drugs and were shuffled from boarding school to boarding school due to their drug use and bad behavior.
Ethel doesn't come across too well here. A very religious Catholic, she frowned on divorce and was also angry that Ted Kennedy wasn't more of an example to her brood. She was especially pissed at Ted after Chappaquiddick. Ethel idolized Rose Kennedy and made it her life's work to have more children that Rose did. She didn't get along well with Jackie, teasing her for her whispery voice and refined manners. Ethel would never speak to the children about their father's murder and it hurt them that she wouldn't allow them to grieve even with her. Ethel herself had come from an immensely wealthy and dysfunctional family, much like the Kennedy's. The book goes into detail about the Skakel's and how Ethel's father was a self made man. The Skakel family also had their fare share of alcoholism, philandering, adultery, plane crashes and the like. Remarkably similar in many respects to the Kennedys.
I found the book incredibly engaging, well written and interesting.

Ethel is my favorite Kennedy along with her husband, Bobby. I was very excited to read this since most of the books about the Kennedy family have been focused on JFK and Jackie. The chapters were pretty short, so it didn't take me long at all to finish the book. I loved reading about her experiences in the 60's when Bobby became a public figure and her lavish parties she threw at Hickory Hill. After Bobby's assassination, the author details some of Ethel's strange behavior and her strong temper, which is a side of her that I hadn't read about before. I won't go into details about it, but it makes for some very interesting reading. The book ends in the mid-1990's right after Jackie Kennedy's death. I hope the author publishes an updated edition talking about Ethel's relationships with her children and grandchildren as she gets older. I would also be interested to hear more about her involvement in Obama's campaign and the effect that Ted Kennedy's death has had on her as she is one of the oldest living members of the Kennedy family next to Jean Kennedy and Sarge Shriver.

Jerry Oppenheimer did an outstanding job with much research and interviews for this book.
I had always had a high regard for President Kennedy and his brother Robert Kennedy. I am
disappointed at some of the revelations revealed in this book. It is a different world of
people with unlimited financial resources, but abundance of money does not make a better
person, I think it actually brings out negative attitudes of pride and arrogance. I never
made it a point to know Ethel Kennedy, but I have had a high regard for Jackie Kennedy. I
think being first lady with Jack was very hard for her. I anguish for both Jackie and Ethel
at the tragic loss of their famous husbands, for them and their children. The Kennedy and
Skakel families despite or maybe because of their wealth had to deal with very tragic events.
I am not disappointed with the author, as I mentioned, he did an outstanding job. I am
disappointed in the outcome of all of their lives.

Well-researched well thought-out book. Without a doubt, the Skakel family of the 1930's was much more interesting and likable than the Kennedy family; especially Big Ann, who was married to George Skakel, the architect of the Skakel fortune.

My favorite quote in the book was. "Old man Skakel paid to keep his name out of the newspaper, and old man Kennedy paid to put his name in the newspaper."

That just about sums up the differences in the families, pre-the Martha Moxley murder.

Just a thought, but when reading the one-star reviews of this book, it seems that the reviewer is either a Kennedy diehard, or maybe a friend of the family looking to run interference. The latter seems more logical to me.

This was a good read --- she produced children like a factory - my feeling was that she was in a race with her mother-in-law.

Read this book many years ago from the Library and enjoyed it very much. Because I now own a large amount of books relating to

the Kenndys I decided to buy it, and have once again enjoyed reading about Ethel Kennedy who was so loyal to her husband, and

in a interview with her this year was still unable to talk about his assassination.
