Biography

  • James Vincent McMorrow (born 14 January 1983) is an indie singer and songwriter from Dublin, Ireland who’s chilling vocals has grasped the nation.

During his college days McMorrow developed an interest in alternative acoustic artists like Sufjan Stevens and Band of Horses and soon he picked up the guitar to begin writing his own songs which complimented his unique vocals. With a collection of songs in his possession, McMorrow took to playing the pub circuit showcasing his music which was well received.

Locking himself away in a house off the Irish coast for six months, he decided to record an album with all the instruments played by himself. The material he produced during his time away would feature on his self-titled EP and his debut full length album “Early in the Morning” released in 2010 displaying his signature grainy vocals. The album received critical acclaim with arising comparisons to the likes of Ray Lamontagne and Bon Iver. James received the European Border Breakers Award in January 2012 in recognition of his music’s breakthrough outside of Ireland. After touring the UK relentlessly, the following month McMorrow played a monumental sold out show at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Not one to be boxed away into genres, McMorrow put all his attention on creating a follow up album which would break genre conventions and instead reflect who he is as an artist. Working best in solitude, McMorrow flew to a remote area of Texas, US and confined himself in a studio for six months as he developed his songcraft whilst incorporating delays and distortion as he experimented with a multitude of sonic elements. The result would be his phenomenal album “Post Tropical” released in 2014 which charted at number two in the Irish charts. Although a far departure from his early releases, the album still revelled in McMorrow’s distinctive and raspy falsetto, intertwined with dreamy folk tendencies whilst incorporating updated music technology with synths and keeping his music current.

Live reviews

  • James Vincent McMorrow

James Vincent McMorrow is an Irish singer-songwriter, often grouped with the likes of Benjamin Francis Leftwich and Ben Howard.

This summer McMorrow has been playing the festival circuit, performing chilled out sets to large crowds. The singer-songwriter trills in his trademark falsetto as he fluctuates between the acoustic tracks of his debut album, ‘Early in the Morning’ and the electronic sounds of ‘Post Tropical.’ McMorrow is an artist with a developing image and a morphing genre.

Crows gather to hear his mournful incitements to ‘make me a higher love.’ Generally, ‘Cavalier’, from his latest album is well received, with its mixture of swirling piano and drum machines. And ‘Red Dust’ never does amiss as it showcases the singer’s impressively high vocal register.

McMorrow has established himself in recent years as a leader of the latest wave of singer-songwriters. James’s lyrics are typical of the contemplative movement, but he is more willing to experiment musically. He strays beyond the trusty acoustic guitar. McMorrow is also more successful in the taking his music to festival stage. Commanding hush between songs, James creates the illusion of an intimate gig. Though, the quiet is short-lived as crowds clap and whoop at the close of each track.

James Vincent McMorrow promises an enjoyable and chilled set.

  • A great show (beautiful venue, it was my first time there)! A lovely happy surprise to have Kevin Garrett at first on stage to warm up the atmosphere, and then, James Vincent McMorrow with his bright new album, and some really nice memories from his previous one. A nicely chosen set list with inbetween a solo part where we could appreciate even more his talent and voice. The only downside I'd say, on certain more powerful songs, is that we couldn't enjoy as much James'voice than on others... (Maybe sound check didn't anticipate those ones ?)

Anyway, it was a perfect eve thanks to James !

  • Some magic moments when James was alene on stage with hos piano and guitar. Unfortunately most of the concert James' voice drowned in the Music from his band - not due to bad Sound on the venue (wonderfull new concerthouse in Copenhagen) but bad adjustement of sound, leasing to noise - not Music. I am a fan of James' Music and work - but I must admit I was quiet disappointed with the performance last Night. But Hey - that is just my opinion.

Kevin Garrett on the other hand was totally awesome. Could have listened to him for hours.

  • James Vincent McMorrow could stand alone and sing acapella and he would still leave audiences captivated. His falsetto never cracks, his set lists easily flow from one song to the next and his audience interaction in between feels like an old friend. He comes across like he has no idea how good he is, which is endearing and makes his talent all the more admirable. He is one of the greatest artists I have ever, ever heard, and I feel honored to have gotten to see him perform live.

  • James delivered an amazing performance, he indeed is a talented musician! The venue was good there was enough room for everyone, however it was a bit bass heavy so the voice of James was sometimes covered by the drums sound...All in all great concert, James is a very humble person he even came out right after the concert to sign autographs and take pictures with the fans.

  • One of the most magical concerts i ever went to. The atmosphere is so peticular, and the staging is really good, James Vincent has that voice that will make you shut up and listen, absorbing all the emotions that he's kind to give you. I recommend seeing him live, he's shy but makes jokes to relax his public and himself. Amazing music, Amazing Band, Amazing James !

  • That was my third JVMM concert, and each was incredible in its own right (the first was James at his funniest, the second was the best music wise). But third time's the charm, and yesterday's concert was probably one of my all time favourite concert. The crowd, James and the music just came together to create a magical, magical night.

  • Fucking amazing. I have not seen that great of a live performance in so long. I was captivated 24/7. A must see! They were jet-lagged, and that did not stop any of them! The venue worked well with them, and I loved how JVM opened for themselves. I got to see so many songs performed live, and I left absolutely on Cloud 9.

  • Loved him. Tight set where the band quickly went from song to song. James felt warm, genuine and sang his ass off. Made me want to go back and re-listen to his songs, and kept me mesmerized to such a degree the time just flew by. He is truly a great live artist. If you like him, go-go-go.
