If i remember correctlty the joke was he had Rossellini on his list, but then took her off in favour of Ryder - only to bump into Rossellini in the coffee shop later in the episode and realising he had 'missed his chance'?

Pretty sure she had a joke in there about her list of 5 coffee house guys and Ross just missed out...

Would this have been a clearance thing? As in they couldn't get the rights to use the names?

Either that or just changed the script after making the prop. Could be clearance, deals, plans to use future actors, audience polling or simply that they decided the new names roll off the tongue better. Either way I remember seeing this in a 42" CRT when it aired (or rather a VHS tape of it) and I couldn't make out the names on screen. It's funny how much garbage they got away with back then when everything was around 640x480.

So many possibilities. Could even have been an inside joke to get Schwimmer to laugh.

I can't imagine it's forgotten lines seeing as how Aniston is holding the card in her hands when she is listing off different names.

A behind the scenes video I saw on YouTube shows the writers on stage during filming, often suggesting changes to dialogs in between takes, based on how the lines played to the live audience. This could have been one of those times

Yeah! In fact the Netflix version I was watching was even clearer than the picture I posted above. I couldn't use Windows Snipping tool as Netflix would black out the screen every time the tool popped up. So I had to take a photo on my phone

That’s why there are so many cameras in shot now that friends is on Netflix. It was never meant to be viewed in widescreen.

Do you need clearance for saying a name?

Yes because actors and products are registered trademarks.

For instance if you make a commercial film or tv programme and mention Coca Cola or Ben Stiller for example, both of those can sue for using their names without permission.

It's the producer's job to gain clearance. Most will require some form of recompense (coke will want you to show their logo or cans, etc for free advertising) and Ben might want an executive producer credit or maybe even for free if he's amenable and you're not disparaging them for laughs.

Some accept a donation to their charities or even a cash payment.

Basically any time you see a product or hear a "name" on TV or in a movie, somebody has had to get clearance for it.

Wow! That's crazy. I'm just thinking of the number of times Friends would just casually mention a celebrity. Probably in the hundreds. You're saying every one of those times, clearance was needed? What about international celebrities? Like Elton John? Or the Pope? Or some less known rugby player in South Africa? Seems like it could get really tedious!

To give you an idea of how deep the tedious rabbit hole goes: Listen to the DVD commentary on Shaun Of The Dead.

Actor Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright have a nice old rant about getting clearances.

The scene where they throw records at the zombies? Every single record had to be cleared with their record labels and individual artists. Even those seen but not thrown.

The adverts and shows on the TVs they were watching? Not only did they have to get clearance from the production companies and actors involved, they had to get clearance from the fucking stunt men used in those scenes too. All individually, so if anybody in the chain said no then they couldn't use the clip.

No wonder movies cost a fortune to make. Every single aspect is nothing but cash, cash, cash.

It's also why TV sitcoms never have a TV running in the background. It'd be a giant ball-ache clearance wise.

Thanks for that information!

I think the real mistake here is that you were watching friends

u/superlost007 avatar

I hope that sometime in the near future shaming someone for what they watch or listen to will die out.

Objectively I agree with you that there are much superior shows than friends. But I watch a few episodes once in a few years for the 90s nostalgia and the childhood nostalgia. I also objectively think there are superior comments to yours :D

I think the real mistake here is that you thought to post this then went through with it

the real mistake is you posting an image of such poor quality on the internet

β€’

Bro, need a hug? You seem agitated.

Please accept my humblest apologies πŸ™πŸΌ

I have truly lowered the high bar that the internet sets when it comes to high quality content - your comment being a prime example. πŸ˜‚

Isn't it past your bedtime?

Most people know how to take a screenshot. You apparently couldn't figure that out and took a picture of a screen with some crap phone. You should be banned.

No, it's day time where I am, so it isn't past my bedtime.

I actually did try to take a screenshot on my PC, but Netflix would black out the screen. Maybe it's some kind of copyright thing they do.

So I used my Galaxy S20, err sorry, "crap phone" as you sagely put it, and did the best I could. Had I known your precious eyes would be cast upon this image for even a moment, I would have hurled my phone out the window.

I shall now ban myself from the joys of life and walk this earth alone, carrying the shame you have rightfully heaped upon me. πŸ˜‚

Lol.. your reaction to this harmless post suggests some serious problems in your life/attitude. Must suck to be you.

It's because Black people don't exist in the Friends universe.

"But what about that one time Aisha Tyler was on it and Ross and Joey were fighting over her?" Yes yes that one gratuitous appearance for 9 episodes after 9 seasons.
