Those not hip to buying non-LP releases missed out on this piece of Gang of Four product, which contains one of their hottest, funkiest songs. "To Hell With Poverty" includes one of the thickest grooves laid down by Hugo Burnham and Dave Allen -- with Andy Gill's charging guitar along for the ride -- as well as one of the band's sharpest lines of sarcastic wit ("To hell with poverty/We'll get drunk on cheap wine"). Taken as a whole the song makes the Red Hot Chili Peppers seem about as funky as Andy Williams and as brainy as -- well, never mind. "Capital (It Fails Us Now)" and "History's Bunk," though containing decent rhythms, are table scraps. Decent, panicked versions of "Cheeseburger" and "What We All Want" close out the EP, with Gill and Jon King trading lines effectively on the former. [Another Day/Another Dollar was appended to the 1995 Infinite Zero/American reissue of Solid Gold.]

40 Years of Post-punk in 10 Albums

In the twilight of the ’70s, as the shrapnel of the punk explosion was still settling, the movement was already inspiring new groups. As New Wave unfurled, the post-punk movement represented a tortured, even radical turn. From pioneers Joy Division and The Fall to current bands Shame and Fontaines D.C., here’s a close-up on the landmark albums that electrified the entire music world and continue to fascinate the rock’n’roll underground.

Interpol, Fade to Black

At the dawn of the new millennium, when garage was king, the New York quartet that then became a trio exploded onto the scene by reviving the dark romanticism of 80’s post-punk.

Grunge in 10 Albums

Around thirty years ago, Seattle became the epicenter of the rock scene, largely thanks to grunge music. The grungy, ‘I don’t care’ attitude rose from the ashes of punk, heavy metal and alt-rock, and instantaneously went from an underground movement to a worldwide success. Perhaps too quickly embraced by the very system it rebuffed, it almost became a caricature of itself by the end of the 1990s. Let’s look back at ten albums that defined the genre.
