Sandals Royal Bahamian often impresses guests with its array of amenities and picturesque location, ideal for scuba diving enthusiasts. However, the resort receives mixed reviews regarding value, with some visitors feeling the high costs are not reflected in service and room quality. While the atmosphere is lively and the dining options are diverse, there are comments about room cleanliness issues and maintenance concerns. Guests also report varying satisfaction with staff services, from attentive to inconsistent. Overall, experiences at this hotel vary widely among travelers.

This was our third time at this resort. First 1999, last 2006.

The second time was at the Butler level when they were piloting the program; this time Club level.

Overall

We got what we came for: a relaxing vacation where we could mindfully unplug and turn down our IQs for a few days. We returned rested and recharged. Very social day and night, but in bed pretty early. When we wanted to be left alone, we were left alone. When we wanted to socialize, we found like-minded folks. If we’d wanted a party this time, we would have easily found one.

Lovely, well-managed, clean resort. Nice refresh of the facilities.

Online Check-In

We checked in online. This resulted in the smoothest check-in that I have ever experienced at Sandals. Upon arrival, we confirmed the last four digits of a credit card and that was it. Super slick.

Airport Transfer

Very smooth. Lovely new terminal since we last visited, and Sandals has a storefront inside the airport.

The driver is an independent operator. Our driver loaded and unloaded a lot of heavy bags (Sandals require cruise wear (no tuxes!) for men in the evenings, no rules for people who aren't men). Most people both ways stiffed the driver. You might plan to keep $20 at hand.

Concierge

We were a mess when we arrived – the first vacation since November 2019, stressed out from the trip (I’m immune compromised, and the interpretations of “wearing a mask” on our plane varied wildly), and I lost my glasses immediately upon arrival, and we were just high maintenance as you can possibly be.

The concierge, Q (she told us to call her that and I forgot to write down her real name, which did, in fairness, begin with “Q”), was awesome – so welcoming, so understanding. She was clearly having a busy day and carved out the time to get us settled, which involved some running around (I promised to meet her at Coconut Grove and went to Calico instead because she said a name with C and I stopped listening). She’s like an obstetrician, only this particular baby that she delivered safely into the world of Sandals weighs about 200 pounds.

Facilities

Newly renovated this year. Rooms are very clean and well appointed – elegant, not ostentatious. More modern than last time. Lovely.

We were in a swim-up room on the resort side of the West Bay Block. The coolest pool in the place at the end of the day. We didn’t use the pool every day, but when we did it was a real treat.

The property is spotlessly clean and well maintained - Everywhere you look, people are cleaning and maintaining the hard and soft scape.

Special mention for Nadine E. Her job involves keeping the railings between the resort and the beach clean of salt spray. We saw her from the spot where we spent most of our days on the beach. She was (unobtrusively) relentless at what looked like a bit of a thankless job. It’s one of those tasks that you would only notice if someone stopped doing it. She may take breaks, but I never saw it.

Restaurants

Breakfast

Lovely buffet at both Kanoo and Tesoro, with fresh omelet/egg dishes prepared to order.

Every omelet I had was well executed – including those stuffed with fillings, and the Julia Child I asked for one day.

Special mention to Makell – she’s a great cook and a serious professional with a brilliant future ahead of her. Great team player, and cool under pressure.

Raymond (who seems to work in each restaurant from dawn to dusk) supports the servers clearing dishes, bringing hot drinks, etc. He moves with what Thomas Keller would describe as a sense of urgency – smooth and swift, with his head on a swivel. If I was in management at Sandals, I would trust Raymond with any task that he was willing to take on.

The Sweets’n’Tings food truck is the only place at the resort to get an espresso drink. They use UHT milk which gives it an odd taste, but the proportions in my cortado were perfect the morning of August 5.

No cream for coffee generally. Great selection of teas.

Lunch

Both Calico and (on the Sandals private island) Aralia House serve a delicious lunch, in shade, with a breeze.

Aralia House is the more ambitious of the two. Every bite is delicious at both. Aralia House is worth the trip (even if one doesn’t want to line up for the first ferry to get a shady spot on the island).

The Coco Queen food truck has delicious Fisk Tacos (grilled and deep fried), as well as conch salad and conch fritters. Highly recommended – these are the things we ate most during the week.

Drinks

Most of the hard liquor on offer is rotgut. You’ve never heard of most of the brands that they serve at the outdoor bars.

The swim-up bar is a party/frat house/good ol' boy vibe. Never once saw a fight break out though, so have at it! Very slow and surly service as a rule, which I can understand at the swim-up bars (less so at the bar in Coconut Grove).

There is a better selection at the indoor bars and some lovely cocktails. Nice selection of wines by the bottle at the indoor restaurants. Lots of debate over how to pronounce “Aix”. I vote for “Yacks” with a soft Y.

There is a lovely cocktail selection at the bar between Butch’s and La Plume. It is actually a pretty great scene – comparable to a real bar in the world, and most folks there are up for socializing.

The entire team at that bar really hustles, and Marvin is a standout. Reads the room perfectly, and knows how to get the crowd going.

Covid has clearly taken the air out of the piano bar – it used to be the beating heart of the resort many evenings (although I must say, not hearing Piano Man eight times a night is a bit of a relief). Nonetheless, the singer there was very talented, and Valentino keeps the smaller crowd engaged and has great energy.
And he knows how to make a drink!

Dinner

Food at Butch’s, Tesoro, and La Plume is continental. I would say very (perhaps very very) good hotel food.

The T-Bone at Butch’s was beautifully charred. Otherwise, most steaks (though perfectly medium rare to order) were on the gray side.

Lovely greens and salads at all times.

Excellent escargot at La Plume.

Very smooth and attentive service at all three restaurants. Jon runs a tight ship at Butch’s. Mikey is a standout (she says she’s new at fine dining but you wouldn’t know it – she could work anywhere). And look: there’s Raymond again!

Gordon’s on the pier was a real treat – a nice breeze, lovely sunset. Service appropriately laid back but attentive.

“Dinner on the Pier”

Dinner on the Pier is actually dinner on the beach, in one of several cabanas. Wayyyyy to hot until sunset. Offering this at 6 PM in summer is crazy. And calling it “on the pier” is misleading.

Our server (his name begins with an O – Oswald?) was great – we had pre-ordered a bottle of champagne, and he brought it out ice old to us on the actual pier – ended up being a lovely night.

Beach

We reserved a cabana for $150 for several days – well worth the money, with excellent shade. The servers were all great – Racquel (Racuel?) was the standout. Where on earth did she find coconut water for my favorite drink?

There are not enough shady spots for everyone. I think a few more of those thatched-roofed round things would be in order.

Island

Worth a visit – we went once, and lots of people seem to go every day. Nicely appointed; seems to be a shaded spot (in various configurations) for everyone who wants one. Lovely pool, nice restaurant.

Overall: as advertised.

Activities

Lots of fund scheduled activities during the day – a great team of activity staff. Saturday they were in and around the pool getting wet, dancing, and showing guests how to have a great time.

Dennilee was a great MC for a bunch of events including TV theme song trivia. But follow her rules or you’ll have to give an impromptu dance recital!

DJ Morada is truly inspired – he spun a great mix throughout the day, with something for everybody. Lots of deep tracks from popular and dance music across genres. You know how sometimes you just have to jump on Spotify and play a song you haven’t thought of in years (or a new song that you can’t get enough of every day)? DJ Morada did that all day, every day while we were there.

In conclusion

No reductions in star count for any of the quibbles above. Lots of folks there work really hard in the heat so we can relax. I have some pretty classy problems.

Highly recommended if you’re for the beach.

Somewhat disappointed with the overall experience at this particular Sandals property. Not all was bad, but there are some very basic issues that need to be corrected for this property to claim it as a 5 star resort. My wife and I have been to other Sandals properties (Jamaica) in the past and truly enjoyed all facets of those previous resort stays. Prior to posting this review, I took some time to see other reviews of this resort, to make sure it wasn't just us, and find a lot of similar problematic issues with basic services at various restaurants and bars. A common statement we heard from management staff thru announcements, etc., was if we needed anything to just ask. Well,we really didn't feel like we should have to ask for everything, especially at a Sandals. Based on our past experiences, staffers went hand over foot to see if you needed anything, but not at the Royal Bahamian. Key managers seemed to be upbeat and always on the lookout, but most of the service staff seemed as though we were interfering with 'their' day. Property maintenance certainly needs a major boost. I get it that this location has seen some bad weather recently, but what I observed was more in line with doing as little as possible to get by. Housekeeping needs a boost in maintenance of facility from lighting to plumbing. No one who goes to a 5 star resort should have to smell sewage in the bathroom by the main pool and under a restaurant/theater for the entire week! I kind of feel like they misrepresented the island as a 'private island' exclusive only to Sandals, which it's not.
The food, we found was great, again lacking in the service area in the dining areas, or taking a long time for prep. The drinks, were 'meh', with bartenders not well trained in either drinks or customer attention over buddy-chat with other staff. A few lead staffers were great, and they could keep things running, but if they left on an errand or end of shift, service went downhill fast.
if you've never been a Sandals, and stay here, it's really not worth the money. Other Sandals properties are way better than this one for sure, at least in our opinion. We don't plan to come back to the Royal Bahamian, but have faith in the Sandals reputation and are planning to stay at their other properties elsewhere.

Ok I brought 25 couples here for an incentive reward. I was a little nervous as I had read on Trip Advisor that service was slow, workers were rude etc.... all of us agreed that while food was not best in the world, it was good, and to the person, all workers were friendly and went out of their way to say hello or ask if we needed help.

In addition, I would like to bottle the attitude of all guest and bring that back to US. Never saw a person act like idiots. All were nice and friendly.

The island is place to go. There are two sides, go to the opposite side of where boat drops you off, much nicer and quieter. Schooners is great place for lunch and Red Snapper and Grouper is top notch.

You will need reservations for several restaurants, I highly recommend making a reservation when arrive, this gives you the option of planning.

Great buffet breakfast in Spices and Casanova, both have same food selection, so it is really up to your preference of building.

Great little pizza place for lunch near beach and also pool grill.

Hit the piano bar at 10pm. If you like to have some fun and sing along, this place is usually packed. Hint, get there around 9:30 for a piano bar stool.

With all of this being said, I will never book another Sandals or Beaches! Not that the food, service and activities were lacking, it is the way I was treated in bringing 54 guest (27) rooms for 4 night. I had 3 last minute cancellations due to health reasons (flu season) which I did not expect a refund, but did expect them to provide some possible room upgrades to our VIP’s. In doing this every year, I chose an all-inclusive for the first time, it was cheaper in the long run. However, by the last minute(days) cancels I was out over $10,000. Sadly their customer service people I had worked with did nothing to help ease our pain.

We spend over $1 million a year in incentive trips, and I have informed all of my people an departments that as long as I’m in charge, there will never be another Sandals property booked. When the lady I was working with for their Jamaica for a October trip, asked why I was no longer interested, I told her why, she said, well our policy is written. I get it, but sometimes a little customer service is good.

So, if you are a couple and drink a lot, Sandals is a good choice for value, if you are not a large drinker.

I visited the Baha Mar and was impressed, I booked it for October group. Little more money, but if I have no-shows, no need to worry about food, drink and entertainment.

But I just want to reiterate, the workers here, working on no tips, provide some of the best customer service you will ever find.

While the resort is lovely, and the private island is fantastic, the service/management wasn't great. My wife and I booked a last minute trip for our 10 year anniversary (which happens to be Feb 13). When we arrived, we tried to book some of the "reservations required" restaurants, but they were already booked up. Since our stay was only 3 nights, it felt like we were put at the bottom of their priority list. They didn't go out of their way at all to accommodate us. It was just "sorry, everything's booked". And when they said that they would investigate and call us late, they never did. I always had to call back.

Also, since we bought a package, they knew what time we would be leaving (6pm) and yet made no effort whatsoever to accomodate a late check out. They just asked us to leave at 11am. When I asked, they said "as a courtesy" they would let us stay until noon (why didn't they just do that from the beginning?), and anything later would cost $50. We were fine with the $50, but again, they said they were booked and would call back to let us know. Guess what...they never did. I had to call myself just to find out that they couldn't do anything for us. Like...nothing. I can think of any number of things they could have done (e.g. provided a shower to use so that we could spend the afternoon on the beach, suggested a dryer so we woudn't have to pack wet clothes, directed us to a change room that wasn't a toilet etc.) but they did nothing. Anyway, we had a great time, and I'm nitpicking here, but given the price we paid, I did expect it to feel luxurious but it definitely did not. My advice: if you're not planning on booking the more expensive rooms, and staying more than 3 days, don't expect to dine in any of the nicer restaurants, and don't expect "luxury included".

We stayed at the Royal Bahamian for 6 nights in January for our honeymoon. We paid a lot more for the butler service and suite. The room was outdated and did not have the wow factor I was expecting. The sheets and pillows smelled horrible and had to request new ones because the ones we had did not smell clean at all. Room service food was mediocre. Sometimes they wouldn’t even answer the phone to take your order. Housekeeping would not take the room service trays once the room was clean so they would set them on the floor outside the room. We would return to our room later in the evening with the dirty trays still outside the room and there was cockroaches crawling on the trays!!! Absolutely unacceptable for a “5 star” resort!! Most of the staff was rude while very few were average with customer service. On several occasions we were completely forgotten about at restaurants. We would sit there for 45 minutes to an hour and have to remind the waitress about our food. The over priced tours from island routes were not enjoyable. The beaches were constantly littered with trash and seaweed. Definitely not the “pristine” beaches as described. We were supposed to receive a $250 credit for island routes and never received that. A pair of Greg Norman sunglasses were supposed to be mailed to us and never received them. I have called and emailed customer service twice and have never received a response. Our stay and experience with sandals was unsatisfactory. This was our honeymoon and a one time opportunity that we can’t redo. I am disgusted with this resort and company and will never return. This review will be written in every website and social media possible.

Upon arriving we received a short tour walking by two pools and then up to our room. Which when I made the reservations was led to believe I would be over looking the pool with an ocean view . And instead I was overlooking the roofs of houses with a partial Oceanview. The room was clean and there was a heart shaped towel on our bed , as we were there for our anniversary . The bathroom was small with only one sink and a tub instead of a walk-in shower . (Who uses a tub ? ) The mini bar is fully stocked but this would be the only time as I had to call every day to get soda and water . I requested non-alcoholic beer but never received it . The mini bar did not have any snacks ,potato chips etc. you have to rely on room service with their limited menu and only when they would answer the phone . Housekeeping was fairly good except for not leaving us towels on two occasions .The beach is nothing like the pictures in the brochure , The beach on the right side of the pier is very small and loaded with seaweed . You couldn’t find a beach chair they are anyway because they were all reserved by people who had butlers by 6 am . Food there is another story if you’re from the tri-state area or United States you will not be happy . Restaurants have a very limited menu of which at least two items are vegan so that gives you three or four items to choose from If you don’t care for plant based meat. The hibachi was the best restaurant there .The pools were clean but only one is heated and when I was there they only had one swim up bar they were refurbishing the other one. They had no coffee shop on the premise where you could get a snack or a piece of cake later at night . The staff for the most part, were very friendly but slow and not punctual , A little understaffed in my opinion.I love the Bahamas as I was married there 34 years ago and I will be back ,but not here. This resort at best is a three star very expensive place to stay.

Let me start off by saying that this is the first time I've eve been disappointed enough to write a review of anything. My husband & I made the trip to the Sandals Royal Bahamian for our honeymoon. We had an ocean front butler suite & thought we were setting ourselves up for success! Right? Wrong.
First, the service. My husband & I are not generally needy people. We have no problem walking to get our own drinks& doing things on our own, therefore, we rarely asked the butlers for anything besides making our dinner reservations. With that being said, even such a simple task was not completed in a timely fashion or correctly. I put in restaurant requests the day that we arrived on the provided calendar & I still had to call the butlers multiple times each day before receiving the time of dinner for that night. On several occasions, they actually booked the wrong restaurant or told us the incorrect time. Next, we were gifted a candle light dinner on the beach (which came at an additional charge) which sounds wonderful & romantic, however, the food was of lesser quality than what was served at the restaurants.
Next, the overall resort. The overall resort was dated & not exactly well kept. As I mentioned, we booked a top notch room. The shower & sink leaked constantly, their was mold on the shower curtain, and furniture was clearly "well loved" aka damaged. House keeping was hit or miss, often, a miss. The staff did not ever seem overly enthused to be there (I get it, its work for them) but it gave off some negative vibes. It was obvious that the facility knows that something is going wrong as many employees were from other locations & at this resort until it "gets functioning properly." Additionally, our room was not even remotely quiet during the day. We were located in the windsor tower & the music from the pool was so loud that it could be heard with the shower running, so taking a nice afternoon nap after a little day drinking was a total no go. A few positives were the reggae cruise (worth the money!) & the hibachi dinner prepared by Manauel (he was fantastic & very entertaining.)
Overall, I feel like this resort oversold us on what it would be. We paid a pretty penny for what we had hoped would be a wonderful vacation, however, it was just so-so. Thank goodness I was in good company!

Hello and thank you for your review of Sandals Royal Bahamian. We do apologize if you did not enjoy your vacation, as we aim to exceed all expectations of quality customer service and luxury inclusions. We do regret that it seems the points mentioned in your review were not brought to the attention of Resort Management via Loop during your stay, as the team would have been more than happy to see that every aspect of your experience agreed with your standards. Nevertheless we do remain respectful of the opinions you have expressed and we only hope to be granted an opportunity to host you again in the future at any one of our Sandals Resorts for a vacation that is more in line with your expectations. Please also permit us to clarify that despite our suites and facilities undergoing regular maintenance and inspections, there may be times when unexpected challenges may arise. Although many guests report having a great time getting to know our entire staff as they render excellent service with a smile, we are respectful of the opinions you have expressed and we recognize that one person’s specific experience can only be judged by that individual. Should you have any lingering concerns, please feel free to write to us at customersupport@sandals.com. We do regret if you feel like you received less than stellar service at any point of your stay and this will be shared with the resort management team for immediate review. This is our third time staying at a Sandals resort and our least favorite experience. I will start with the positives, the food and drinks were as expected, this the only reason I am giving 3 stars. The deserts served after our meals seem not to have any sugar in them which I found odd. Our room was in the Windsor building and was worn down, mold in the caulk around the tup and sinks. Water spots on the tile along the floor around the tub and some sort of green build up in the corner, this is not a 5 star resort. Overall the room was just beat up and well used. The bed and pillows were comfortable. We stayed on the pool side which was a mistake, music is very loud and plays until 5 p.m. and then there is nightly entertainment at the fire pits which you will also hear loud and clear. I should of researched this more before picking the room. The internet even after paying to upgrade was not great. No matter what we could not stay connected, it definitely needs to be upgraded. The rooms need to be updated. Our friends stayed in the building Maldora and even though they were upgraded recently the room showed well used. We have had Butler service at our other Sandal stays and this one was the worst. I do not know if the training for this resort is different or if the staff is over worked. We barely saw our butler and when we would call with requests they would take 1/2 and hour to an hour to show up. Definitely not worth the money we paid to have one. The private island is very nice, if you go over in the afternoon take towels because there will not be any once you get there. It was relaxing, the food and drinks were great. The beach was very nice, worth a day trip. The only connection we felt with any employee was with the photographer DeVon, he would check on us and he was always entertaining. We enjoyed him and his sense of humor. We will go back to the Bahamas but will not stay here again.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to share your review of Sandals Royal Bahamian. We were delighted to have had you as a guest with us and while we are glad to note that you enjoyed your stay overall, it is disheartening if you felt like there were elements of your stay that did not meet expectations. I did a four day stay with my husband. We stayed in a Butler level suite in the Balmoral. Great views of the ocean and the island.
We like the private car and the service we had was prety good most of the time. It kind of petered out on the last day. Overall our Butler's were nice to have for reservations in the restaurants and for getting us a nice beach igloo every day and breakfast.
The food was quite good, better than we expected. We ate at Casanova's, Spice's Baccarat and The Crystal Room. All good meals. Higher quality and lots of selections available.
The staff without exception were helpful, friendly and warm.
Some downsides, the Champagne for the room is not champagne, it is Brut.
Please, please, please get rid of the water bottles. I was having nightmares seeing all the plastic waste. Give people a Sandals branded reusable water bottle to use during their stay. Its a win win. Put a jug of water with glasses in the rooms and at the bars.
We watched a group of im assuming locally hired people to clean up the Sargassum Seaweed on the beach. I realize its an issue for visitors, HOWEVER, its a worse thing to see plastic bag afterplastic bag of seaweed being carted awy and having to watch those poor peole working with a rake and their hands to clean the beach up. I flet tlike I was in a third world country. The disparity between us lying around catching a tan and drinnking while they laboured without getting anywhere was very sad.
Please get a small front end loader, dump the seaweed in a truck etc and cart it away au naturel to be dumped.
If it wasnt for these two things I probably wuld have given a better rating but these are serious issues .
We travel extensively and the seaweed is everywhere, other resorts are putting in booms or using teh machines to clean it up. It will keep coming back.
Sandlas, I want to continue visiting , please address your plastic problem.

Good day and thank you for your review on our Resort Sandals Royal Bahamian, we are very happy to hear that you've enjoyed your stay. However, we are indeed saddened if some aspects of your stay fell short of meeting your expectations as this is certainly not indicative of the norm for us. We appreciate you taking time out to highlight the team members who went above and beyond to make your stay extra special, kudos to them all. While we understand that Sargassum Seaweed is grinding, thank you for your support, whatever we can do to help our environment is worth trying. All Sandals Resorts & Beaches Resorts participate in the "Earth-check" bench marking and certification program, which has led to recent changes such as the use of timers on electrical equipment such as: whirlpools, steam rooms at the spa, outdoor lighting for walkways and refrigeration equipment in the kitchens. Additionally, we are proud to say that every Sandals Resort has eliminated single-use plastic straws and stirrers used across the resorts and we now use Eco-friendly paper and bio-degradable straws are available upon request. Most of the changes we make at the resort level are as a direct result of the feedback received from our guests. Your feedback is welcome and will be reported to the Management team for consideration. Nonetheless, it is our sincere hope that this has not deterred you from visiting again as we would like the chance to provide you with a vacation that we hope is more in line with your expectations should you choose to visit another one of our resorts in the future.

Probably the worst customer service I have experienced in any hotel, anywhere in the world.

If you like good food and good service..... go elsewhere!

The best thing about Royal Bahamian is definitely the private island which has great beaches (much better than the hotel beaches which were covered in seaweed).

The waitresses in most of the restaurants are completely disinterested and some had a real attitude problem. This could be down to them not being allowed to accept tips but either way, it is not acceptable in my opinion.

One night my wife and I decided to eat in the room but when the food came it was stone cold. We sent it back and waited another 40 minutes but guess what? It was stone cold again! We didn't get to eat that night.

I really cannot think of many positives to say about Sandals Royal Bahamian.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and will certainly not be staying at a Sandals resort again.

The West Bay rooms behind Tesoro has the musty smell to them. A few other people mentioned it. Our room was WSJ, but others had the swim up on the other side of the main entrance in that back corner. I am not aware of smells in any other area.
