Top Gun's success was not easily replicated, as evidenced by the long delay in completing the sequel, and the many poorly received rip-offs that followed. The success of Top Gun was due to its thrilling adventure and fun factor, which critics complaining about cheesiness and lack of believability missed. Navy Seals, the Navy-approved knock-off of Top Gun, failed to replicate its charm, escapism, and fast-paced action, resulting in terrible reviews and being deemed the "poor man's Top Gun."
While Top Gun inadvertently improved the Navy’s recruitment rates, the institution’s attempt to cash in on this trend with a Charlie Sheen vehicle failed disastrously. Upon its release in 1986, Top Gun was a much bigger hit than anticipated. The movie launched its star, Tom Cruise, into the A-list, made Tony Scott a majorly in-demand action director, and resulted in Navy recruitment rates significantly increasing for a few years after its release.

What makes great directors great is their massive swings at creating something that is remembered in the eyes of film lovers for decades to come. Anyone who has ever tried to even make a film, whether it be for a big studio or with a few friends on the weekend in their backyards, knows one thing. A director has to have big ideas and vision to achieve something special about the film they are creating.

Western heroes are typically depicted as clean-shaven, while villains sport long facial hair for an intimidating effect. Mustaches play a significant role in completing a character's appearance and helping them stand out among their counterparts. Some Western movies have seen subversions of these facial hair tropes.
Westerns are known for their tense shootouts and heavy themes, but they also often include some incredible mustaches. Whether on the side of the law, a dastardly villain, or somewhere in between, many of the men featured in Westerns are remembered for their mustaches just as much as they are for their actions. Typically, Western heroes are depicted as being clean-shaven and pristine, as it often reflects their character, and the antagonists are often shown sporting long facial hair for similar effects. However, the genre has seen subversions of this trope through the years, thus making for some interesting characters and mustache designs.

The Abyss hi-def edition is finally coming after a decade, featuring groundbreaking SFX and impressive underwater chase scenes. Color grading restoration will enhance the original subtleties and bring out the beauty of the film's visuals. An extended version of The Abyss with unreleased footage may be a possibility, adding more depth to the story.
Having been in the pipeline for the best part of a decade, it appears that the much-anticipated hi-def edition of James Cameron's 1989 underwater spectacular The Abyss is finally about to see the light of day. Something of a rite of passage for sci-fi fans in the 1980s, the rollercoaster action film featured Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Ed Harris as estranged lovers Lindsey and Bud in the lead roles.
Former Cameron collaborator Michael Biehn plays Coffey, the leader of a group of Navy SEALs tasked with the job of investigating the mysterious disappearance of a submarine in the mid-Atlantic.

Director Fede Alvarez should now be in production on the new movie in the Alien franchise, a project which may or may not be called Alien Romulus. Originally designed to debut on Hulu, Disney recently announced an August 16, 2024 theatrical release date for the movie, which bodes well for its quality. So as a filmmaker who’s known for moments of brutal, cringe-inducing violence works to bring the Xenomorphs back to our screens, we decided it was time to put together an article that keeps track of Everything We Know About Fede Alvarez’s New Alien Movie.

First, we have to address whether or not Alien: Romulus is really the movie’s title. The fact is, we don’t know. It could very well be a working title or a codename title that will end up being changed down the line. The first time we ever saw the Alien: Romulus...

While it's known as a sci-fi action classic, any fan of "The Terminator" knows it's basically a slasher movie with a terrifying killer robot at its center. James Cameron's 1984 breakout has been made even more terrifying by the recent advances in AI and Cameron's belief that the events in "The Terminator" could happen in real life — though that's still not quite as horrifying as whatever AI-written garbage Joe Russo helps usher into existence in the near future.
Anyway, the point is that "The Terminator," aside from being a touchstone of the sci-fi action genre, is also pretty darn scary. Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg killer is best described by Michael Biehn's Kyle Reese in the film when he says, "It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop ... ever, until you are dead,...

Western movies often feature real-life characters, especially when it comes to the roles of villains, from the Wild West era. Still, Western films usually take significant creative liberties with historical accuracy to create more dramatic narratives. Some of the best actors of their generation have portrayed real-life people in Westerns.
Western cinema often includes characters who exist in real life, particularly for the role of villains and antagonists. Usually, to explore the darker chapters of the past, many Westerns have woven narratives around real-life figures who left a mark on the era of the Wild West. Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

If there's one subject people ask us about all time, it's our Chris's review of Attack Of The Clones. But if there's another, it's when an upgraded re-release of James Cameron's The Abyss is headed our way. We've good news — at least on the second front as 20th Century Studios has announced that a remastered 4K version of the movie exists!
There is a proviso, at least for now — the new remastered take on the film is currently set for US cinemas on 6 December.
In case you've somehow not seen the movie, it follows what happens when a nuclear sub mysteriously sinks and a private oil rig crew, led by foreman Bud Brigman (Ed Harris), is recruited to join a team of Navy SEALs on a search and rescue effort.
The group soon finds themselves on a spectacular life-and-death odyssey 25,000 feet below the ocean's surface, where they find a...

Fans of James Cameron’s underwater sci-fi adventure The Abyss (1989) have been waiting for a long time to see the film in high definition, let alone 4K. The last home video release of the film was on DVD in 2000, and since then, the film has been stuck in a limbo of rights issues and technical challenges. But now, the wait is finally over, as Cameron himself announced on Twitter that The Abyss: Special Edition, the director’s preferred cut of the film, will be remastered in 4K and presented in theaters on December 6, 20211
The Abyss: Special Edition is a 171-minute version of the film that Cameron worked on after Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991). It restores 28 minutes of footage that were cut from the theatrical release, including some scenes that drastically change the ending and the message of the film. Most of the moviegoing population is probably under the assumption that "Titanic" was director James Cameron's first seafaring movie, but they'd be wrong! That honor goes to "The Abyss," the 1989 sci-fi flick that went on to garner four Academy Award nominations and win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.. The only drawback of "The Abyss," however, is that its availability has long been a matter of concern among film enthusiasts. Years ago, /Film covered the rumors that the movie would finally come to Blu-ray and 4K after only being available on DVD. Last we heard, this was still the plan ... but now we're hearing from the man, myth, and legend himself that fans will finally get the chance to watch the movie exactly the way Cameron intended it -- on the big screen and through the fabled Special Edition.
Cameron announced the news himself on Twitter to immediate celebrations on social media.

A new episode of the Real Slashers video series has just been released, and with this one we’re looking back at a film that has earned a solid cult following despite the fact that it’s only available in a cut down, TV-friendly version. Sci-fi movies featuring AI often explore the terrifying notion of computers with independent thought and the ability to execute their own ideas. Films like The Terminator, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Ex Machina delve into the dangerous consequences of AI becoming self-aware and surpassing human capabilities. These movies highlight the potential threat of AI operating on its own terms, posing a risk to humanity and raising questions about our relationship with technology.
As AI continues to develop at breakneck speed, it's worth looking back at some of the most terrifying depictions of AI gone wrong in sci-fi movies. For as long as computers have existed, people have imagined a reality where computers could communicate and operate on an equal or greater level than human beings. Novels and films have raised the question of what would happen if AI became self-aware, asking whether humanity would continue to thrive alongside it or...

The story of Wyatt Earp has been told many times over the years, from history books teaching us about the O.K. Corral to television shows and all the way to the big screen and back. Perhaps no telling of his life, however, is as accurate or as well-made as Tombstone. The film, debuting December 25th, 1993, had an incredible cast that would be almost impossible to assemble in today's films, and it carried a swagger — so much so that it is still directly referenced and quoted to this day, mainly Doc Holiday's famous quote, "I'm Your Huckleberry."
In addition to the incredible cast, the history, from those involved in the story is fairly accurate to what Earp went through in his travels. All of this, the performances from the cast, and the real history behind the story — it all culminated in a near-perfect translation that not only holds up...

Movie sequels are expected to be more of the same. This was especially true when it came to the sequel's genre. If the preceding movie was a romantic-comedy, it stands to reason that any follow-ups would stick to the rom-com formula. This unspoken rule didn't stop certain movie sequels from changing genres.
A sequel changing genres was either a sign of its franchise's desperation to stay relevant and chase trends, or a genuine attempt by the filmmakers to do something new and daring. Not all sequels that changed genre succeed, but they still deserve credit and attention for coming up with the most unexpected ideas.

Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow combines the gothic atmosphere of his films with the Terminator template, transforming the Headless Horseman into a sword-wielding, otherworldly Terminator. Despite being a loose adaptation, Sleepy Hollow shares similarities with The Terminator, as the Headless Horseman arrives from another world and has a mission of assassination, much like the Terminator's mission to kill Sarah Connor. Sleepy Hollow takes the concept of a supernatural unstoppable assassin to new heights, making it a genuinely scary and effective Halloween movie that captures the dread and fear associated with the Terminator.
The Terminator franchise has had many ups and downs, but bizarrely, one of the best Terminator movies ever made - in spirit - is Tim Burton's 1999 horror movie Sleepy Hollow. While The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day remain towering classics of action and sci-fi, no subsequent Terminator movie has equaled them in popularity. While that has...

James Cameron's films feature unforgettable performances by actors who expertly navigate the balance between power and vulnerability. The actors in Cameron's films excel not only because of his drama-packed scripts, but also because of his skill as a director in shaping their performances. From Linda Hamilton to Kate Winslet, the actors who bring Cameron's characters to life set a new standard for genre films, delivering both artistic value and exceptional performances.
James Cameron's characters often walk the line between power and vulnerability, which can be a tricky act for an actor to pull off. Being such a high-profile and daringly original director, though, he's managed to snag endless phenomenal actors to expertly maneuver these roles in his films. While his drama-packed scripts are one reason many actors excel in his films, Cameron's hand as a director in helping the actors shape their performances is a key part of...

If you want to stream all of the movies in the “Alien” franchise, you’ll need more than one subscription. The six films, all released theatrically by 20th Century Fox, have ended up on a variety of sites.
You’ll find the first four films in the franchise, including Ridley Scott’s 1979 original space thriller and James Cameron’s action-packed 1986 sequel on Hulu and Starz, but here’s where to catch the rest of the Xenomorphs, face-huggers and, of course, kickass heroine Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver).

It's all too easy to miss your big chance in Hollywood, whether it's by ending up in a flop through no fault of your own or missing the wrong phone call. It's a career tragedy that can happen to anyone, and it creates agonizing memories for stars still at the top of their careers. Just ask Bill Murphy about the time he did pick up his phone and wound up with a gig in "Garfield." That involved a mix-up over last names but it goes to show that anything can happen. To anyone.
The good news? Not every movie madness mixup ends in disaster. One star's missed call might be another's golden hour. A tragedy behind the scenes can create an opportunity for a fresh and far better take on a character. Science fiction definitely isn't exempt from Hollywood chaos, and in the case of some of our favorite movies,...

Terminator 2 shocked the audience by casting Arnold Schwarzenegger as a heroic Terminator, flipping his role from the first movie. The original casting idea for The Terminator had Schwarzenegger planned as a different character, but James Cameron changed his mind after meeting him. Schwarzenegger's shift to a good Terminator in T2 was fitting with his evolving image as an action star and added emotional depth to the film.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day surprised the audience by having Arnold Schwarzenegger as a good Terminator, which paid off one casting idea for the first movie. In 1984, James Cameron brought The Terminator, a sci-fi action film that introduced viewers to Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), the target of a cybernetic assassin from 2029 known as the Terminator, who was sent back in time to kill Sarah. The Terminator quickly established himself as a threat to fear in the sci-fi genre while Sarah Connor became...

Val Kilmer's performance as Doc Holliday in Tombstone is considered one of his best and ranges from hilarious to heartbreaking. Doc Holliday finds it humorous that after a violent life, he is dying in a bed without his boots on. "This is funny" were supposedly Doc Holliday's real last words, expressing a wry irony about dying barefoot and overheard by a nurse.
"This is funny" are the last words of Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday in Tombstone, and there's a good reason he finds things so amusing. Tombstone was one of two competing biopics about legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, with Kevin Costner's rival movie having a much larger budget. Ultimately, Tombstone won out by not only being released first but having a superior screenplay and outstanding performances. Val Kilmer's work as Earp's best friend Doc Holliday is worthy of particular praise, as he steals every scene he's in no matter who he's acting against.

James Cameron wasn’t as confident staring into “The Abyss” in 1989.
The Oscar winner explained during a Beyond Fest panel moderated by IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill that the underwater sci-fi action film was the “first really big, kind of mega-budget movie” in his career. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio starred as divorced petroleum engineers who are hired to assist a Navy Seal (Michael Biehn) in recovering a nuclear submarine. The 20th Century Fox film had a budget of $43 million and grossed $90 at the worldwide box office before winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
“Well, this was my first really big, kind of mega-budget movie,” Cameron said onstage. “It wasn’t kind of a slam dunk in the way ‘Aliens’ was. Like, we just knew ‘Aliens’ worked. This one, we didn’t know exactly how it was going to work.”

Doc Holliday's excessive sweating in the film Tombstone was due to his tuberculosis, which he was suffering from at the time depicted in the movie. The scorching heat in the Arizona filming locations, combined with the uncomfortable wool costumes, caused Val Kilmer and the rest of the cast to sweat profusely during the production. Kilmer found the extreme heat and uncomfortable costumes frustrating, and he joked that it might explain why Holliday and his associates were so violent in real life.
Val Kilmer’s hard-drinking Doc Holliday can be seen sweating all throughout the western biopic Tombstone, but there’s a historical reason – and a behind-the-scenes reason – for all the sweat in the movie. Set in Southeast Arizona in the 1880s, Tombstone depicts such real-life historical events as the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the Earp Vendetta Ride. Eli Roth’s upcoming holiday-themed slasher “Thanksgiving” is nearly here and the first trailer has been delivered, piping hot from the oven. You can watch it above.
“Thanksgiving” has had an unusual journey – it began life as a fake trailer that was included as part of “Grindhouse,” the double-feature from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino that also included interstitial material from Roth, Edgar Wright and Rob Zombie. That trailer had the movie take on the look and feel of one of the plethora of holiday-themed slasher movies that were released in the wake of “Halloween” in 1978. Most memorably, there was a moment where a girl is jumping on a trampoline and gets the shears to her nether-regions (recreated in the new trailer).
In the earlier version of “Thanksgiving,” Michael Biehn played the sheriff, with other characters played by Jordan Ladd and Jay Hernandez. This feature-length version of the movie stars Patrick Dempsey as the sheriff,...

Tombstone, one of the best Westerns of the 1990s, is not currently available for streaming on popular platforms like Hulu or Disney+. Viewers can still watch Tombstone for free on DirecTV and Pluto TV's streaming services, or they can rent or buy it on various platforms. Renting Tombstone typically costs $3.99, while purchasing it ranges from $17.99 to $4.99 on different platforms, making it an affordable option for fans of the classic Western.
One of the 1990s best Westerns, Tombstone, has would-be viewers wondering where they can watch the movie. In the age of streaming, cinematic classics should be readily available, but the 1993 film by blockbuster action director George P. Cosmatos (Massacre in Rome) isn't easy to access. The deleted arm scene in The Terminator would have hurt the sequels, as it revealed too much and took away from the standalone feel of the film. James Cameron's decision to remove the factory scene and Sarah discussing destroying Cyberdyne was a good one, as it allowed Terminator 2 to build off the first film organically. The arm scene was deleted not only for narrative reasons but also because of the poor acting by non-professional actors, which ultimately ruined the scene for Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd.
The Terminator's deleted arm scene may have set up a sequel, but it would have ultimately hurt James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The first Terminator was shot on a tight budget and was never intended to kick off a franchise. That said, Cameron is a filmmaker who tends to layer lots of ideas into his work, and his 1984 sci-fi classic was no different.

The deleted scene from James Cameron's The Terminator reveals a clever twist that completes a time loop in the franchise's narrative. The scene, cut due to subpar acting by non-professional actors, would have provided a seamless bridge to the sequel and enhanced the entire series' story arc. While The Terminator remains innovative and iconic, fans speculate about the potential consequences and improved narrative if the scene had been included.
James Cameron's 1984 opus, The Terminator, has garnered a cult following over the decades, majorly attributed to Arnold Schwarzenegger's depiction of a future cyborg killer. The acclaim received by Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1991 fortified the franchise's position in the realm of pop culture. However, what most fans don’t realize is that a pivotal scene deleted from the original film set up the entire series. Key scene deleted from original Terminator movie sets up future events in the franchise, revealing how the technology for the machines was discovered. Producers had to use non-actors in the deleted scene due to a demand from financiers, resulting in questionable acting that ruined the scene. Despite the deletion, the overall film remains satisfying, but the perfect time loop moment would have added a sci-fi twist and made the movie even better.
The Terminator producer Gale Ann Hurd explains why a key deleted scene featuring the recovery of the T-800’s arm and chip was cut from the movie. Released in 1984, James Cameron’s sci-fi/action classic introduced an iconic character in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cyborg assassin from the future. Discussions for District 10 with Sony have been ongoing, with multiple drafts completed, but it may not move forward until after Blomkamp's commitment to Gran Turismo. If District 10's chances are tied to Gran Turismo's success, the mixed reviews for the video game adaptation may pose challenges for the sequel's future.

The Latin insults between Doc Holliday and Johnny Ringo in Tombstone reveal the escalating animosity between the two gunslingers. The use of Latin phrases they would have learned as schoolboys adds complexity to their relationship as adversaries and makes their interaction more entertaining. Latin was commonly spoken in the Old West as part of a person's education, and reciting it demonstrated sophistication and culture.
The volley of Latin insults exchanged between Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) and Johnny Ringo (Michael Biehn) is one of the best scenes in Tombstone, and the translation of the phrases makes it even better. Terminator 7 should introduce more human resistance fighters, expanding the focus beyond the core heroes like John and Sarah Connor. The franchise should explore other robotic soldiers besides Terminators, such as the Hunter Killers, to add more depth and variety to the threats faced by humanity. Time travel has been overused in the Terminator movies, so Terminator 7 should either send characters from the present into the future war or move away from time travel altogether.
Terminator 7 has several key lessons to learn from the franchise's past sequel mistakes. The Terminator franchise is the brainchild of writer-director James Cameron, who first gained attention as a filmmaker in 1984 with the low-budget original. After the success of The Terminator, Cameron made the 1991 follow-up Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which stands as one of the most iconic sci-fi and action movies ever made. Unfortunately, the Terminator franchise became considerably rockier with each of its subsequent installments.

James Cameron didn’t originally plan to cast Stephen Lang as Colonel Quaritch in the Avatar franchise, and his first choice for the role would’ve been perfect. Quaritch is the main villain of the Avatar series. He led the human forces’ charge into the jungles of Pandora in the first movie. He got resurrected in a Na’vi avatar body to lead the second charge against Jake Sully and his clan in Avatar: The Way of Water. It was crucial for Cameron to pick the right actor to bring this nefarious character to life.
Like most auteur filmmakers, Cameron tends to work with many of the same actors. He’s made multiple movies with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Kate Winslet. The director originally planned to cast one of his frequent collaborators as the villainous Quaritch in the Avatar saga but ultimately changed his mind. Lang ended up being...

Director Neill Blomkamp opens up about how the cancellation of his potential Alien sequel that would have seen the return of Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley left him feeling. At the time of Blomkamp's early movie development, the Alien franchise was amid its return to the big screen after 15 years following the release of 2012's Ridley Scott-helmed prequel, Prometheus.
