Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
This ranks among the best recordings of La Bohème (a very crowded category) and is particularly important for José Carreras fans as one of the last recordings he made in the 1970s, before leukemia threatened his life and undermined his voice. He and Katia Ricciarelli always worked well together, and the long, ecstatic duet that ends act 1 is a perfect showcase for their voices and their emotional involvement in the music. He is also effective in the heartbreaking acts 3 and 4, and Ingvar Wixell is at his rare best as the painter Rodolfo. --Joe McLellan

I've always been a fan of Colin Davis and Jose Carreras; their collaboration (with Montserrat Caballe) on Puccini's Tosca is an example of the strong emotion great performers can bring to music. Following that wonderful recording, it was natural for Davis and Carreras to collaborate again, this time with the wonderful Katia Ricciarelli. But here, the result is beautiful yet tame.
The problem is not Carreras or Ricciarelli; they're in great voice. The problem is they are trying to be passionate with someone watching them. Colin Davis chaperones every phrase making sure they are very well-behaved. The result can be ravishing even while missing some of the fire one hears on other recordings.
The lovers' duet in act 1 is sweet in a Capraesque way. Davis' good manners extend to Ashley Putnam as Musetta, too. Her waltz aria in act 2 "quando me'n vo' " should be feisty and flirty, but comes across like a concert aria. Ingvar Wixell as Musetta's lover Marcello does not sound jealous or forceful (compare Sherrill Milnes on Solti's also-not-perfect recording), so the resulting climax with her friends lands wide.
That being said, there is much to enjoy, too. Carreras and Ricciarelli blend wonderfully and have palpable chemistry. The sound is excellent with great detail and fullness. This is, above all, a performance that strives for polished surfaces.
If you're a Carreras fan, as I am, you'll want this recording for his Rodolfo. If you are a Ricciarelli fan, as I am, you'll love this recording of her Mimi. She is the best thing about this set. But if you're looking for a passionate La Boheme that brings you to tear-laden heights, this probably is not a first recommendation.
