This album does not follow up 'Hey Babe' you can see a clear transition from Hey Babe to 'Become What You Are' (Juliana Hatfield 3) to 'Only Everything'. It was obvious that working with Hole and some other louder rockier bands that Sean Slade/Paul Kolderie (producers) had brought some of that influence to Juliana. This album is weird in that it has a huge contrast of overblown Marshall on 11 guitar distortion to sweeter than Blake Babies mellow voices, the best example being 'My Darling' which combines a chimy jangle guitar with super luch soft voice, flute sounds with the most speaker blasting grunge break that appears after each verse, yes it's rollercoaster ride of soft and LOUUUUDDDDD blows me away every time I hear it! Universal Heartbeat is also a clever song that combines a rhodes-y organ sound with a searing sonic blasting guitar 'a heart, a heart that hurts, is a heart, a heart that works' it is probably the most honest lyric on the album given Juliana's perennial unrequited or disappointing love affairs. What A Life rips straight into it and shocks the listener, if you thought I Got No Idols and Dame WIth A Rod from 'Become What You Are' are sonic blasters of the highest order, this surpasses both (only 'Down On Me' from Bed can compete). Live On Tomorrow, OK OK, Hang Down From heaven, My Darling are all strong tracks. The slower 'Bottles And Flowers' is possibly my favourite track on the album, combining nice acoustic sounds with that awesome grunge tone and sweet vocal. Simplicity Is Beautiful shows Juliana bi-polar side, a very sensual understated vocal.

This album did not continue the commercial success of become what you are, Slade/Kolderie's move to a grungier, heavier sound did not appeal to all after Scott Litt's heavily produced 'Become What You Are' that contained some kick ass songs but where the distortion on most tracks is more a calmer overdrive rather than amp meltdown, with lots of doiuble tracked vocals and harmonies and jangly sounds mingled in (well he did produce REM after all). However, it is a more consistent offering. The only disappointment for me was that the brilliant b-side to 'Universal Heartbeat' 'Where Would I Be Without You' (arguably as good or better than the A side) was not included instead of Dumb Fun or Congratulations which for me are the weakest tracks. Still, Juliana never really fit a major label with all their corporate posturing and commercialised releases, so returning indie suited her after this release...

I think all of Juliana Hatfields' albums can be found in your local Thrift Shops. I found her debut _Hey Babe_ for 49 cents and now have found her follow-up _Only Everything_ for 99 cents. This one is definitely better than her debut. Stronger guitars and drums make better use of her vocals. My goal is to find her entire catalogue in thrift stores for $1 or less.

Damn I love these songs
Artist: Juliana Hatfield
Album: Only Everything
Released: 1995

For many years, the only music in my collection by Juliana Hatfield was the CD single release of My Sister by the Juliana Hatfield Three. In the mid-90s I used to go to this CD store in the city and I would scour the CD singles for gems. That single was one of those gems.

Finally though, back in 2017, I bought my first full-length Juliana album, and so Only Everything came into my life. Five years prior I had been lucky enough to see Juliana live in concert along with her good friend Evan Dando (2012), and that was an amazing show. But I guess I just like to take my time with this music collecting thing!

I went through a period a while back where I was addicted to certain songs from this album (the ones you can find in the Faves list below), and now anytime these songs start playing on my iPod, there's no way in hell I'm skipping. If I had to choose an ultimate fave track, it'd definitely be Bottles and Flowers.

I have my preferences when it comes to all kinds of music and these have to be met, otherwise I'm likely to dismiss the artist and never look back. That miss Hatfield had almost her entire catalogue under my careful watch for a while speak volumes of her talent. Only Everything may be her finest hour, and relistens will confirm whether I'm being too strict on the rating or not. At 14 songs I think she should've been more critical on the obvious flaws appearing in the second half. I also thought this lacked some of the charming cuteness of her debut. I realize it's still here, but she had definitely matured at this point. After all, this was right before Alanis Morissette got huge and all female songwriters had to adjust properly.

This was my first Juliana album and it is still the one I consider to be my favorite. It is almost perfect from start to finish. But then again, I've spun this thing probably a hundred times so I might be slightly biased. However, this album really is a great one to try if you are unfamiliar with her music.

This album has sentimental value to me because it was my first listen. What can be said? She's got a sweet, sexy, girlie voice backed with some jammin', rockin' 90's alternative style rock. It just doesn't get any better than this. Every song on this disk is high quality, making it for a perfect 5 star album!

Inevitably, the circumstances of why each and every one of the albums in my collection came to find a place will never be remembered. Strangely though it's the ones I've owned the longest which are easier to recall. Maybe it's the onset of the affliction confined mainly to the elderly were they can remember to the smallest detail something that happened sixty years ago but have completely forgotten what they did sixty minutes before. If so, my memory will soon be shot.

Only Everything by Juliana Hatfield is a total mystery. The only alternative to word of mouth is mad impulse and, if that was the case, I can only hope it happens more often because this is an excellent effort. But I think I may be out of step with that opinion because Only Everything seems to be one of those albums when fence-sitting is not considered an option.

I can sort of understand why Hatfield can be so divisive. There is a graininess and distortion to the guitars which suggests an attempt at emulating the best the grunge bands had to offer, but Hatfield's voice has a sugary sweetness that wouldn't be out of place in a band like, say, The Bangles. It's an odd combination that really strikes a chord with me. I've no idea what her work was like with Blakes Babies but here it's a strangely effective concoction.

"What A Life", "Dumb Fun", "OK OK", "Congratulations" and others are punchy sprints, while "Live On Tomorrow", "My Darling", and "Bottles And Flowers" offer something more reflective and poppy. But there is a nagging problem with Only Everything. You can't help feeling if it wasn't for Hatfield's voice the songs would be little more than shells. Everything's a little one paced and choruses are almost non-existent. Additionally Hatfield's guitar playing is leaden and one dimensional doing nothing but keeping the momentum going.

Yet, for all these faults, Only Everything remains a really enjoyable album.

The "light grunge" sound features some really strong guitar work early on in the album combined with a very, very unique voice makes this a very interesting sound.

One could knock her on some of her lackluster lyrics like on "Dumb Fun" but nobody ever got on Kurt's ass for his confusing grunge lyrics. Still they could be better at times.

"Dying Proof" is sort of bland compared to the previous tracks and doesn't really do much for me.

"OK OK" really stands out with the most raw energy on the album, one of the best tracks on this album.

Hatfield's voice is really unique and can be heard varying ways, it would be easy to categorize her as boring, but there is almost no difference in how she sings on the lighter songs compared to her more grunge influenced songs, which puts more emphasis on the music, which isn't anything remarkable or nessecary to hear before dying, but its simplisitc enough that it works quite well and this whole album while not overachieving achieves plenty.

At times there is simply just too much noise and not enough content...

This album has a lot of potential, but really never delivers with anything that will affect the listener in any meaningful way. This is a subpar effort.
