I was expecting more of this album. Athens Andover seems to exclude much of what is interesting about both The Troggs and the collaborators, R.E.M. This means, there is no raw "Wild Thing", catchy "With a Girl Like You" or harmonious "Love Is All Around" here. "Don't You Know" is easily my favourite track on the album, "Together" is very probably number two. These are both Reg Presley songs, but the rest of those aren't very worthy. The rest isn't much better either, and the only one written by Mssrs. Buck, Mills and Berry with Peter Holsapple, "Nowhere Road", is one of the lesser numbers on the album. In fact, Side A (on vinyl) is mostly OK, but the flipside feels shorter of ideas excluding the aforementioned "Don't You Know." If the rockers were more rocking, the whole might be more impressive. Now this is just, y'know, quite nice over andover.

I found The Troggs guilty in the high crime of "Making a new Record 20 years after".

REM and the Troggs recording an album together sounds like a dream come true, and though it's far from being bad, one can't help, but think that the collaboration on Athens Andover doesn't add up to the sum of its parts. REM's input is very strong, sounding very much like their albums Out of Time and Automatic for the People, though with perhaps a stronger influence of Southern music. Even the vocal melodies are very similar to Michael Stipe's, but there's also a nod here and there to the garage roots of the Troggs, as well. The main problem here is unfortunately Reg Presley. His voice hasn't aged well, his lyrics range from pretty good to hilariously bad, and half the time he just doesn't gel with the music. There is some great stuff here, though, such as the opening track Crazy Annie and Dust Bowl, a rocker that warns of global warming, though it's almost too straightforward and obvious to really be effective. Generally this is a good listen, but there are a few clunkers, the worst offender being Deja Vu where Reg cheekily recycles classic Troggs lyrics. It's almost painful to listen to. There's more good than bad about Athens Andover, but it's far more likely to please REM fans than Troggs fans, and really it doesn't come close to the best work by either group.
