      "COLLECTOR'S ITEM FROM THE SAN FRANCISCO SCENE" (2008) by GRACE SLICK & THE GREAT SOCIETY on COLUMBIA RECORDS is a CD compilation from two (2) LP's . The first nine (9) songs ( 1 - 9 ) are from the album "CONSPICUOUS ONLY IN ITS ABSENCE" (1968) and the the last eight (8) songs ( 10 - 17 ) are from "VOL. 2 COLLECTOR'S ITEM HOW IT WAS" (1968) .

        Marvellous album, a real hidden gem, of the early beginnings of Grace Slick. These performances contain the very first versions of Somebody To Love (with additional lyrics!), then still called Someone To Love btw, and White Rabbit. The Great Society was active during 1965/66, in the San Fransisco rock scene. Collectors Edition consist of 2 live performances from The Great Society.
        With that said, who the hell came up with the idea to (re)produce a CD (Retroworld, 2013) with pauses between the tracks?! It is a LIVE album, twats. Very very annoying when listening to the CD. Urgh!!

          This compilation double set from 1971 brings out a whole lot of history for lead singer Gracie Slick...she was in the band with her husband Jerry Slick and his bro, Darby...They played local SF clubs from '65 to '66 until Grace left for the big time of the "Jefferson Airplane"...Even though they played Psychedelic Rock, several cuts have a distinctive jazz flair...One of MY all time FAV jazz mellow songs is on the LP, "Nature Boy"...Their version is haunting and serves up a chilling cut that you will treasure...This was recorded LIVE with tons of ambient noise (but who cares) at the Matrix in San Francisco...Closed in 1972, the space had other lives but now has been re-branded "The MATRIX...Old IS new again...Enjoy this tasty early listen of Grace Slick when she exhibited a true RAW vocal sound that was beyond words...It was "The GREAT Society"...

            My copy of this plays side 4 on both side 3 and 4. The matrix numbers are different in each of the runouts but it plays exactly the same. Anyone else have this misprint?
