BTEC Award in Music Practice
Course outline:
The course provides opportunities for pupils to learn and develop as musicians. The course requires all pupils to perform and record themselves. It is made up of 3 components. Two of the components are internally assessed and one component is externally assessed.
Component 1: Exploring Musical Products and Styles.
This will involve a range of different styles of music that pupils will listen to and analyse. Pupils will then create music in a similar style and then perform it in a range of contexts. All pupils will be expected to perform in the classroom and at events such as, open mic nights, concerts, talent shows and other events. This component is internally assessed and is weighted at 30% of the total qualification.
Component 2: Music Skills Development.
Component 2 engages students with two disciplines, which are developed through practical tasks. This could be the development of two different instruments, composing new music, or music production. Pupils must document their progress and gather evidence of the process. This component is internally assessed and is weighted at 30% of the total qualification.
Component 3: Responding to a Commercial Music Brief.
This gives learners the opportunity to develop and present music in response to a given commercial music brief. Pupils will be able to work to their strengths and interests and implement the skills and knowledge that they have developed throughout the course. Pupils will be able to respond to the brief as a performer, composer or producer. This component is externally assessed and is weighted at 40% of the total qualification.
Throughout the course pupils will learn about music theory, composing and producing music. Pupils will use software such as, Garage Band and Sibelius which will help them record and experiment with their musical ideas. Pupils will be given opportunities to perform in a range of contexts and through these experiences they will develop their performing craft.
The course allows pupils to pursue their musical strengths and develop other areas of interest. The course will prepare students for further study post KS4 but will also offer a range of experiences that will give pupils confidence and fulfilment.
