True story of French actress’ wartime affair with Nazi officer

French actress Laetitia Casta, the star of "Arletty: A Guilty Passion."

“Arletty: A Guilty Passion” is by no means a classic, but it’s a solidly good movie about a very interesting topic.

In the normal course of things, you would never come across it, because it was made for French television. It’s about the actress known as Arletty, best known in the United States for her role in “Children of Paradise.” During the Nazi occupation of France, Arletty had an affair with a German officer, for which she was eventually tried for treason and sentenced to a year and a half in jail. (After her sentence, she resumed her career.) The film, set in the war years, is the story of how that affair came about.

Arletty is played by Laetitia Casta, and while this fact will be lost on most Americans watching, Casta completely changes her essence to play this role. It’s a real transformation. The film is a fascinating look at a complicated, independent woman who did what she wanted.

Of the affair, Arletty later said, “My heart is French, but my ass is international.”

"Arletty: A Guilty Passion" can be streamed on Amazon Prime.
