Maryjean Higgins Obituary

Maryjean (Kelly) Higgins passed away on April 3, 2021 surrounded by her family after a brief illness.

She was born on May 22, 1934 in Brookline, MA, the daughter of Edward and Mildred Kelly. After a brief career as a cheerleader, she met and married her high school sweetheart Joseph Richard "Dick" Higgins and they started their journey through 51 years of marriage.

She enjoyed short but fulfilling careers in numerous fields including the New England Telephone Company and Macy's Department Store. Her favorite occupation was that of a crossing guard at the Webster Elementary School. Though well respected by her fellow Crossing Guardians, she was eventually asked to move on from this career choice because of traffic jams caused by her chatting at length with friends in the pick-up line.

Maryjean found true happiness when she was home raising her children and shuffling them to and from their respective activities and numerous sporting events. She enthusiastically worked the concession stand at North Little League while cheering them on from behind the grill. Maryjean was able to relive those days through her grandchildren and enjoyed those moments to the fullest.

She cherished the time she spent with her two closest partners in crime, Marge Kirby and Judy Sandler, from whom no one was able to escape their shared wisdom.

Maryjean was predeceased by her loving husband, Dick, her parents Ed and Mildred Kelly, her younger sister Joanie (Kelly) Sullivan, Joanie's husband Robert, and her youngest sister, Patricia (Kelly) Clancy. She is survived by her brother, Jack Kelly.

Her family members which include her daughters, Carolyn Higgins, Nancy and her husband Dan Roberts; her sons, J.R. (Joseph) Higgins Jr and Marybeth LaRocque, Mark Higgins and Stephanie Currier, will miss her dearly. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Jamie and Rich Cote, Christopher Pamula, Heather and Cary Neal, Montana Roberts, Daniel Roberts, Braiedon and Gavin Currier; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and a plethora of dear lifelong friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Kirby family for the kind and loving support they showed throughout the years. Maryjean was loved by too many to name but the family would like you to know you are all in their thoughts and memories.

Calling hours at Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, 1799 Elm St, corner of North St, will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 pm. Funeral services will be private at the family's convenience.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made to the Manchester Firefighter Relief Association, 100 Merrimack St, Manchester, NH 03101.

Mary Jean will be with her friend Libby, and they can watch from above what their kids are up to. When they went out for lunch they always invited me to go with them. I always said no so they could talk about all of us. I miss them both . Deb Benton

Our thoughts and prayers are with Carolyn, Nancy, JR, and Mark for the loss of your Mom. I will always remember MaryJean for the bluest eyes I've ever seen. I will remember her, Patty and Joanie sitting around the table in Brookline eating Brigham's ice cream. I remember coming into the family hearing stories about her rebellious son's and their antics which always made me smile, having seen that movie. When we had to make a decision on Joanie's life, I called MaryJean. I said, "I don't know what to do."
She said, "You have to make a decision. You're the one who's there, and whatever it is we're behind you."
That was MaryJean Higgins. A strong. big hearted woman of Brookline, who adored her children, loved her brother and sisters, and accepted me into her family as if I were one of her own. I know she is with her sisters now, telling Dickie that she'll be right back. She has to go get a container of Brighams ice cream.
We'll miss you and we love you MaryJ
ean.
God bless,
Peter and Karen

To Maryjean's family,

Please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of your mom, grandmother. I always enjoyed seeing Maryjean when she came into the gym at the Senior Center. We shared the same birthday so we Gemini's got together over the years to celebrate our day over a glass of wine. She always had a funny story and spoke very highly of all of her kids and grandkids. She was so proud. Her presence will be sorely missed. Godspeed Maryjean. Keep them laughing up there.

Carolyn, Nancy, JR, and Mark. I'm so very sorry for your families loss, as Mrs. Higgins is someone who stays in your world forever when you meet her. I still remember being that little girl with my mother, living at my grandmother's house up the street from Mr. and Mrs. Higgins. How they both always made me feel welcomed into their home and pool, anytime I wanted. Mrs. Higgins LOVE for everyone around her, was beyond admirable. She will be missed dearly and her love, will be in all our hearts forever. Thinking of you all, during this time. Sending thoughts and prayers.

No one was more thoughtful or kind than Maryjean Higgins, No one was more loyal. She found something good in everyone. She fiercely defended family and friends, called out bad behavior and injustice in a nanosecond and at the same time made us all laugh, We loved the Brookline tales, summers at the pool, watching the old movies on the porch and the fun-loving banter. We simply adored her.

I loved reading this beautiful obituary about this larger than life presence in so many lives including mine. I loved Maryjean from the first moment our family were introduced to the infamous Higgins family and we were thereafter treated like part of her fun and loving family. I will forever cherish the memories of the many Higgins- Bannon summer olympics we held poolside in her home. My parents and Dick must be so happy to finally having this wonderful woman with them again and to liven up heaven a bit. RIP Maryjean and know that you were so cherished by so many❤❤
