Do use caution as the water drops off in depth not too far out. - EmmaHLondon, United Kingdom87 contributionsNice little beachNice little beach about a 20 minute walk from the cruise port (you can walk along the road or along the beach). 2 sunbeds + umbrella cost $25 to hire. There are a few small unofficial bars and you can hire snorkel equipment. Surprisingly quiet, even with 2 cruise ships visiting.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 20, 2024
- Mike C4 contributionsCalm Governors Beach. If you're coming to Grand Turk on a cruise ship.....exit the port terminal heading left and cut across the car park to the main road. Heading towards the airport, it's about a 20 minute walk on a safe road. The sea is always on your left, and there is a clear sign for Governors Beach. When we got there, we were able to hire 2 sunbeds, an umbrella and a wifi code for $28. The beach is lovely, and we were the only ones there (until an organised excursion from our ship arrived mid-afternoon). As you look to the sea, there are jetty ruins on your left. Look to your right, and you'll see a small reef. It is a safe swim and shallow water - no more than 6 to 8 feet deep, but the water is so clear and there are plenty of fish to see. When we were snorkelling there, a turtle arrived and spent a few minutes with us before slowly heading out to sea. Ignore the cruise ship crowds heading for the beach, and make the effort to get to Governors. There are no facilities though, and I'd reccomend you took food and drink, although the stall hiring the sunbeds had a small selection of cold drinks, crisps etc.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 23, 2024
- LoriO24Tampa, Florida470 contributionsExcellent and uncrowdedBeautiful and not crowded at all! We came on a cruise and the beaches just off the ship were packed. We found this beach online and so glad we did. It’s an easy walk, 15 mins or so. You can take the road or easily walk down the beach to Jack’s bar and then cut over to the road. Going that way means only a small bit of road walking, and there is a big sign that states where the entrance to the beach is. It was white sand and clear water and only a handful of others - highly recommend passing the first section of chairs and going to the further one as we had only one other set of people near us, it was like our own private location! Two chairs and an umbrella were $25 which I thought fair, and there is a lady who cooks made to order foods you can order as well. We had a red snapper, fresh from the water, rice and beans and two waters for only $20. It was delicious. Highly recommend this beach and can’t wait to return!Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 22, 2024

Nice but beware. We were dropped off via taxi at the stretch with the rusty ship just off the shore. Chairs were rented by a local for $20. I think the taxi driver and the beach person had a deal going.

This governor's beach has turquoise color, clear water, and sandy beach. It's beautiful, but it isn't worth $4 for taxi per person and $25 for 2 chairs and one umbrella taking in attention that the chairs and umbrella were old and broken. The umbrella was short and wouldn't give enough shade. The lady who served the chairs wasn't able to cary them to the beach complaining they were too heavy for her. We ended up carrying our own chairs because there was no one else to help us. The beach area where the chairs were allowed to be carried to was very limited, so we were not allowed to move them even a step to the right or to the front.
We received the worst service experience at the Governor's beach out of all the beaches we have ever visited for our 15 years cruising.
Don't waist your money and go to the beach next to the port on a walking distance.

Stopped at Grand Turk on our cruise. It is such a stunning location. The cruise ship stops right at the beach so no transfers needed. There is a purpose built cruise terminal which houses a duty free shop. There is also a purpose built swimming pool with sun beds for the cruise passengers along with a flo-rider. (charges apply). Bars & shops in the area include Margaritaville, Starbucks, Ron Juan Surf Shack to name a few. Some of the sun beds are free for cruise passengers, but its not clear which ones they are or where.
The beach nearest the ship is the most crowded, so we decided to walk up to Governor's Beach. Its a 20/30 min walk and this is where the Mega One Triton Shipwreck is. You cant walk all the way up the beach to it. We walked up the beach as far as Jack's Shack, turned right up the side of it, and carry on walking until you reach the road. Turn left onto the road and follow it until you see a sign pointing to Governor's Beach. We got to the beach around 8.30am and had it to ourselves for about an hour. There are toilets here. There are also plenty of trees on the beach for shade.
Around 10am a guy turned up with a load of sun beds and umbrellas if you wanted. A local person also set up a make-shift bar selling beers, soft drinks and crisps. Even as the morning progressed, the beach remained very quiet.
Next to the shipwreck was a rocky area in the sea and these 2 places were excellent for snorkelling. The sand was white and soft and the water turquoise crystal clear. Whilst snorkelling we saw a turtle, and plenty of colourful fish. This beach is what you imagine a Caribbean beach should be!

Governor’s Beach is stunning! Beautiful white sand and varying shades of blue/turquoise water. This little cove of paradise is my favorite beach. Each day I wake up on my “Turk-cation” looking forward to seeing the beauty that waits me at the end of my lengthy walk. Currently, the beach is officially closed. However, utilizing your two feet to embark the short walk down from the Grand Turk Cruise Terminal, will land you in this picturesque place. Truly amazing!

This is one of my favorite beaches in all of the Caribbean! The water is crystal clear and the waves a re very minimal. My elderly mother was able to get in/out without worrying about being knocked over by waves. Just absolutely stunning water.

We visited Grand Turk recently as it was one of the ports of call on our cruise. Our ship had 3700 passengers - 3690 of them crammed in like sardines in the beach where the ship drops you off. 10 of us went to Governor's beach and had the whole thing to ourselves. Getting to Governor's beach is easy but requires a little know how. If you look at the panoramic picture taken from the deck of the ship, you will see a pier with a red crane on it. That is a construction zone and it is not passable along the beach - at least not in August of 2018 - there is a lot of construction going on as they attempt to recover from last year's destructive hurricane. Governor's beach starts where you see that shipwreck just north of the pier. We arrived there by walking for about 15 minutes along the streets you see in the map in the picture. Others rented golf carts, but really it is just a 15 minute walk with an attached price tag of zero.
Once we got to the beach there was literally no one there. It is a ghost beach. The beach itself is pretty clean, the water is great, and the sand is soft. The buildings that line the beach have been abandoned as they were destroyed by hurricane Irma and have not been rebuilt yet. Wild donkeys roam their ruins and it is somewhat eerie at first. After and hour and few more people arrived and the surreal feel eased, but for a time it was just us, ruins, sand, water, and donkeys.
The snorkeling was pretty good. While we were there we could see boats of tourists being brought to a spot about 200 yards from us to snorkel. Basically they paid someone $60 to snorkel where we could swim out to in a matter of minutes. Another boat of raucous drinking partiers stopped at the beach for about an hour. They paid $100 to have someone take them to this beach and give them a drink.
So here is my advise. Bring your own snorkeling gear. Walk to Governor's beach, and if you really want to drop $100 on the island spend it with a local who could use your business. They have a lot of rebuilding to do.

Prior to going to Grand Turks, I did a little research on comparing Governor’s Beach to Pillory Beach. The one thing I can honestly say is that if you prefer crowds, stimulating loud music, being closed to the pier where if you’re cruising your ship is “right there” and most importantly large rocks on the floor in the clear blue sea…then Governor’s Beach is for you.
Governor’s Beach is for those who cruised to Grand Turks to get off their ship and walk to an area that is for their convenient. The water surface is what you expect from the Caribbean Sea. However, below on the sea’s floor lays a rocky, rugged, uneven terrain of boulders which makes it an uncomfortable wading area where your steps are clumsy; best to wear water shoes while in the water at Governor’s Beach.
Through the beach area is nice looking and fun, it’s still a typical tourist area that offers a few restaurants, like Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville which has a pool, overpriced shops and drinks, a clean rest room and mostly everyone else from your cruise ship.
If you want to see the area, I suggest take a taxi to Pillory Beach. For $8 the taxi driver gives you a little history tour along the way as he makes his way through small street, stray dogs and donkeys. Pillory Beach was quite, nice, relaxing and for $10 you can get a lounge chair underneath a palm tree and listen to the waves. The sea floor was flat like it should be which made it prefect. It was all I needed to cast my stress away.
Governor beach area would be nice for an evening beach party but for sun and tanning and a quite rest area where jumping in the water won’t hurt your feet, Pillory Beach has my vote.

Hi, Christine. What would you like to know about this attraction? Did you have to purchase a tour to get on the beach? Or what was the cost to use the beach facilities? Last time I wen there we paid for a tour and it included snorkeling equipment/beach chairs/Umbrella's. There is 4 of us this year and trying to save $$

Hello. I'm reading conflicting information about this beach. Some places say that there are vendors offering food and drinks on port days. Others say there's nothing and it's secluded. If there is in fact nothing, are there shops right at port we can buy alcoholic drinks to bring to the beach? I don't really care about not having chairs and we'll have water from the cruise ship. Thanks!

It has been awhile since I have been there but I have been doing a bunch of research and looking at maps. I can see on the reviews there are conflicting information. I do not believe there are any amenities or food at Governors Beach. It is walking distance but it is about 1 mile (30 min) from the cruise port. I have been to Cruise Center Beach which is close to the cruise port and it has chairs, etc. So I think people are getting the beaches confused. PS. Last time I visited, I went to Cruise Center Beach and my sister went to Governors Beach. She said Governors was way prettier. I didn't think Cruise Center beach was that nice but there are chairs, food and even a pool if you start walking closer to the ship. Hope this helps.
