Toller Film.

--> mein Urteil: sehenswerter Mittelalter-Krimi

Rezension aus Deutschland vom 1. Mai 2015
Obwohl...?

The Spanish Inquisition
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 11. August 2012
This movie is a great suggestion for history buffs. It is a real story of the life of the Jewish in Spain during the Inquisition. It seems that those who survived, did so because they pretended to convert to Catholicism, while secretly remaining true to their own faith. A realistic picture of how so many perished at the hands of the church, in the name of God and religion, this tale has a surprise revelation at the end. Day of Wrath is the kind of movie you will think about long after the credits roll at the end.

truly echoing a time of great untold wealth in Spain
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 14. März 2016
DAY of WRATH:
This movie takes place in 1542, just 50 years after the expulsion of all unconverted Jews and Moors from Spain. It appears to the new Sheriff that the Royals of his town are dying and their murders are being immediately thoroughly cleaned up and there is shockingly no evidence. They are either part of a nefarious civil war, a plot, he is required to unravel with no assistance, or he the new Sheriff is a drunk and imagining it all.
The music, the scenery and the costumes are both opulent and lush, truly echoing a time of great untold wealth in Spain. The entire film is not only great eye and ear candy but a veritable feast for history buffs wanting a glimpse into a period of Spanish life rarely discussed or revealed.
As a result of the Expulsion of all the Moors and the Jews on August 3, 1492 to this day there is a large segment of the Spanish population which more than suspects that they have Jewish blood but only reveal that on rare occasions; like when 200,000 turned up in the 1980s to welcome a famous Israeli rabbi who came to the hills of Toledo Spain the sister city of Safed a hilltop town in Israel to present the population with thousands of seedlings, a gift for reforestation.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: In 1492 the Spanish were under great financial difficulty after winning the 900 years of battles with the Moors for control of southern Spain and the Moorish capitol city of Granada in particular. The victory over the Moorish infidels finally came after the joining of Spanish city States of Aragon and Castile which was made possible with the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella when this Catholic King and Queen joined their forces.
Though expulsion of the Moors and Jews from Spain followed this well earned victory it is ironic that Ferdinand’s father, a bastard had a Jewish mother and three of Isabella’s great-great-grandparents (though far back originally) also clearly had Iberian (Sephardic) Jewish roots.
Despite their roots, at the end of the war with the Moors the King and Queen announced that on August 3, 1492, there would be a great expulsion from Spain of all the Jews and the Moors. It is interesting that was the same date that Christopher Columbus chose to leave the country as well.
Columbus, who is suspected of being a hidden Jew from Genoa, made his first voyage to the new world on that day supposedly to escape the expulsion. It is known that he spoke Ladino not Italian and not Spanish. His trip was in realty mostly paid for by a Rabbi and two Jewish financiers who had already converted to Catholicism. Though I imagine that Isabella may have borrowed some of the money for this voyage from these financiers because in 50 years at the start of this movie Spain had by then become the riches nation in the world, having reaped large financial benefits from the plunder brought back from the indigenous people of South America. But at the time of the expulsion besides religious fervor, it also appears that there were great economic reasons for ridding the country of Spain of any Jews and Moors who would not convert to Catholicism.
Over the centuries the Moors had been famous builders who had constructed great edifices for the Spanish and they along with the many great Jewish artisans were both owed for there fine crafts but were forced to leave unpaid yet must have all their debts paid before leaving Spain that August. Those Jews who had for generations financed the 900 years of wars the Spanish waged against the Moorish infidels were given the choice to loose their advisory positions and any money owed or convert.
Those who remained after a rigorous conversion where allowed to retain their power but often moved to other Spanish cities to start anew where they were not known as Jews. Rigorous scrutiny of these Conversos, their lines of heredity and their religious leanings continued into the Inquisition which was designed to determine who had converted just to maintain wealth and position and who had converted for a true belief in Christ. As did Ferdinand and Isabella many of those in power had hidden Jewish ancestors, in a generation some of the children were raised unaware that they ever had Jewish blood but many knew and hid their love of Jewish tradition and their ongoing observing of Food laws.

Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 9. August 2006
This mishmash of a plot, wanna-be gruesome FX and hack acting is well worth watching for two reasons: the excellent period sets and costumes found in Hungary, and the presence of our son Ben O'Brien, a fine young actor and school teacher in Budapest. Of course, that is just the opinion of proud parents!
