Paramount has released a new Transformers: The Last Knight poster bearing the tagline, “Rethink your heroes.” As we saw in the first trailer, Optimus Prime has become evil, or at the very least, wants to murder Bumblebee, as if this had any emotional resonance whatsoever. Between Transformers and The Fate of the Furious, it looks like 2017 will be the year where our one-dimensional heroes get turned into misunderstood antagonists. Granted, I’m not sure who has less depth: the growling, robotic hunk of faux nobility or Optimus Prime.

I would say that plot details on The Last Knight are scarce right now, but that would imply that The Last Knight has a plot, or that anyone would care about the story if said plot existed. What’s more bizarre is how a franchise featuring vehicles that turn into giant robots is so utterly joyless. Michael Bay has made movies proving he clearly has a sense of humor (it’s a sense of humor that functions at the level of a 12-year-old boy, but a sense of humor nonetheless), and yet here we have glowering robots killing each other and the tagline to “Rethink your heroes.” I’m not sure why Transformers movies need to be dark and gritty, but for some reason that tone helps them gross over a billion dollars worldwide.

Check out the new Transformers: The Last Knight poster below. The film opens June 23, 2017 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Laura Haddock, Stanley Tucci, Jerrod Carmichael, John Goodman, John Turturro, Josh Duhamel, Isabela Moner, Gil Birmingham, and Jean Dujardin.
