Washington Sundar has been enjoying a memorable outing in his debut Test for Team India, against Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane. After picking up a three-wicket haul with the ball, the all-rounder displayed his batting skills on Day 3 of the Test match to help India close down on Australia's first-innings total of 369 runs.

Sundar was roped into the playing XI for the Brisbane Test after a back injury to R Ashwin. Asked to stay as a net bowler in Australia after the T20 series, little did Sundar expect to don the white jersey for India on the tour. However, he repaid the trust shown in him by the team management with a brilliant show.

Sundar walked out to bat at number 7 after India lost Mayank Agarwal on 161, on Day 3 of the Brisbane Test. He took his time to settle down and looked solid through his 62-run knock which was laced with 7 fours and a six. With his maiden Test fifty, Sundar became only the third Indian to score a half-century on Test debut in Australia.

He also achieved a rare double - becoming the second Indian to take three wickets and score a fifty in his debut Test. Dattu Phadkar, who scored 51 runs and took three wickets in Sydney Test against Australia in 1947-48 tour is the only other Indian to have achieved the rare double on Test debut.

Sundar was complemented well by Shardul Thakur, who also notched duo his maiden Test fifty as the duo frustrated the Australian bowlers with their resilience. Shardul score 67 off 115 balls laced with 9 fours and 2 sixes. The duo added a 121-run stand for the seventh wicket - the highest seventh-wicket stand by India in a Test match in Brisbane.

Shardul and Sundar's partnership helped India post 336 runs on the board in their first innings, handing Australia a lead of only 33 runs. Australia ended the day on 21/0, extending their lead by 54 runs.
