I know it sounds dumb, but I live in a Eastern European shithole. Whenever I go out, I see a lot of people (generally men) spit on the street like it's nothing. Even back in high school, people spat INSIDE the school which always disgusted me and made me want to hate most of the school population. Me personally, I've never spat on the street, unless I had something terrible and dirty in my mouth and even then, I always try to find a sink beforehand. I find the act of spitting on the ground disgusting and a sign of being an absolute prick. I wanted to ask if is it really generally accepted to do that and how is it in other non backwards trash countries? Do people generally spit on the ground in your country?

I personally find it pretty disgusting, never really a pleasant sight to be on a nice walk and then happen upon some rando's spit on the ground. I especially find it disgusting when people do it in the presence of others, I'd have hoped that COVID would have maybe made people a bit more considerate but I still see this stuff regularly. In my country, it's generally considered pretty low class to do it, but of course a lot of people don't care.

I personally find it gross, especially when people spit right in a walkway. I understand sometimes you have to do it, but at least do it out of the way and not where someone is going to step.

I’m in the U.S. It is not common, but as long as someone does it into the actual street or gutter (or even into a plant) and not directly on the sidewalk it seems harmless enough.
However, I don’t know that I would want to spend time with anyone who made it a habit to spit in the street unless they had some temporary issue (a flu, allergies, etc) and needed to.
There's nothing wrong with spitting outdoors. The alternative is swallowing saliva which is much grosser by comparison.

Different people produce saliva at different rates. Congratulations on your low saliva production, but it's still gross.
In the us, generally no. At least not into the sidewalk. Of course a lot of people do it anyway.

The south currently. I used to live in the east where I saw spitting more often - but it was almost always into the grass or road, not the sidewalk

I think it’s really gross but people do it often where I’m from. Never understood why, because it’s very easy to swallow your spit. If you’re dipping, you should be carrying a bottle or something else to spit into. (And also please quit, for your health.)
