Exploring a kind of innocent, joyful love, “I Don’t Know Why” is the ninth single by Swedish pop/EDM duo NOTD and Norwegian singer Astrid S. The song was first revealed in a video posted to the production duo’s Instagram on April 28th, 2020, also revealing three other untitled singles planned for release in 2020. The cover art was eventually unveiled on May 4th and the first audio of the song was posted on May 7th, the day prior to the song’s release.

A May 2020 Idolator article quotes NOTD saying:
We’ve always been huge fans of Astrid and have wanted to collaborate on a song together for a long time. We have crossed paths many times before, and ‘I Don’t Know Why’ finally felt like the perfect song to do together.
Astrid also revealed:
I’ve been friends with [Tobias Danielsson and Samuel Brandt] for a little while now, and we’ve always wanted to do a song together. I was so happy when they sent me this song, which I think is perfect for the summer. I hope we’ll be able to write something together one day.
NOTD announced the song would be released on May 8th 2020 across their social media with a snippet video featuring part of the song whilst also teasing further potential new songs in July, September and November.
