True crime enthusiasts have been satirized more sharply, but engaging leads and a lightly humorous touch make Based on a True Story worth investigating.

Jasper Rees Daily Telegraph (UK) The vapidities of Los Angeles and social media are easier targets but mercilessly hit by a script that’s well served by a cast with reliably funny bones. Rated: 4/5 Dec 29, 2023 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Suspension of disbelief is a highwire act in Based on a True Story, but the show benefits from the couple’s risky, short-sighted instincts and some delicious twists. Rated: 3.5/5 Jun 14, 2023 Full Review John Anderson Wall Street Journal It would have required a much more delicate hand than the one piloting this particular barge to navigate the narrow inlet between couples’ comedy and social satire that lies in the path of Based on a True Story. Jun 13, 2023 Full Review Andrew Murray The Upcoming Although Rosenburg’s true crime satire is let down by its clashing tone, its engaging plot is what makes this show an enjoyable watch. Rated: 3/5 Jan 4, 2024 Full Review Chris Wasser Sunday Independent (Ireland) Like Only Murders…, it's about a grisly murder and a band of opportunistic podcasters. Unlike Only Murders…, it tries way too hard to justify its existence. Jan 4, 2024 Full Review Álvaro Onieva Fotogramas While the series has a very similar premise to Selena Gomez's comedy, Based on a True Story manages to find its own tone and personality, and doesn't give a sense of déjà vu. Nashville I It's not the best. There's no mystery, and honestly all of the characters are pretty annoying. You may alternate between who to root against the most, based on who's whining more. The whole premise of using a serial killer to profit isn't very exciting, based on the way Peacock's got it set up. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/13/24 Full Review Aurora P Really funny, dark comedy. The pace of storytelling is just right, and the main actors are all brilliant. The storyline is nothing unique though Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/17/24 Full Review Sunday Night Streaming o Based on a True Story Season 1 - 8.2 - This one was surprisingly great. Guess I am on a Kaley Cuoco kick lately. Went into this one blind, and the concept is definitely unique. But it is fun. Kaley's character is deep into true crime podcasts and learns about how much money that these people are making on the likes of apple, spotify, itunes, etc. When they stumble upon a real life serial killer they have the brilliant idea to start a podcast with the killer. They then get themselves in hilarious situations throughout and have to tip toe around the situation, with all there knew found fame. The episodes are quick and easy to binge, found myself cruising through episodes and so mad when it just ends on a massive cliffhanger. But regardless it left the door open for a great season 2. Every character is great and cast one. Matt and Nathans relationship is by far the funniest, Nathan finally was finding a friend and then it turns out who this guy really is. The daydreams caught me off guard far too many times, that I often second guessed what was real and what was not. There are a lot of twists and turns in these 30 minute episodes. Really enjoyed this one. Looking forward to season 2. Official sundaynightstreaming rating of 8.2 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/06/24 Full Review John S Watched all 8 episodes hoping for something interesting to happens or some kind of conclusion. Neither ever came. Shame as the leading three actors are decent enough…just the plot that's pretty tedious and too many pointless dream sequences. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Matthew S A hilarious dark comedy is extremely entertaining and binge ready Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Bella B Boring, slow paced, nonsensical.
