About the Author

B.K. Taylor wrote for ABC's Home Improvement, designed characters for Jim Henson Associates and Walt Disney Features Animation, created illustrations  for Sesame Street publications, in addition to his subversive humor for National Lampoon.

Tim Allen is an actor and comedian known for his role as Tim Taylor on the ABC sitcom Home Improvement. In 2017, he won The People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Comedic TV Actor and has published two books.

RL Stine is a novelist and short story writer best known for his young adult horror fiction, including the Fear Street and Goosebumps series. His books have sold over 400 million copies.

My junior high and high school years were spent reading National Lampoon, with the work of B.K. Taylor being one of the main reasons. I love and highly recommend this book.

Though I remember most of these from when they were first published in the National Lampoon, I still got a laugh out of them. I did not "get" Timberland tales at the time, but now, 40 years later, they hit the spot. There is one of the Appletons cartoons (page 12) that I remember ending differently, one that showed the father in a darker light, but I could be wrong. I had completely forgotten about the Uncle Kunta tales.
Unlike the print in the Lampoon, which often faded or yellowed with age, this book is printed on high-quality paper that showcases Taylor's skill and exacting drawing/inking.

If you read National Lampoon Magazine from the mid 70's to mid 80's you know exactly how funny B.K. Taylor's comics are. And here they are all the episodes of "The Appletons," "Timberland Tales," and "Stories from Uncle Kunta (in that order) complete with an introduction by B.K. Taylor himself. All three strips are hilarious. It was a real treat for me to read these again. Some I remembered, some I'd forgotten about and some I'd never seen. Nicely presented in a hardcover book, printed on good paper and in a size where they are easy to read and where you can appreciate Taylor's artwork. If you're a fan on Taylor and/or National Lampoon Magazine, put this in your shopping cart right away. Hard to say how long this will stay in print, and you know you must have it.

happy that this collection has finally come out. I was a big National LampOOn reader since the early 80's and The Appletons & Timberland Tales were always my favorite regular feature. This book has all B. K. Taylor's art from the NatLamp years. My only complaint is that the cartoons are not in chronological order. This messes with the storytelling somewhat as a couple of the strips are sequential. Other than that, great book. Nice to see the crisply drawn art in all it's great detail. Brings back great memories.

I followed these strips with great enthusiasm as they were originally appearing in the pages of the National Lampoon, and I am thrilled to pieces to have them handily collected like this. Not only is it great to have them all in one place, but they are reproduced larger than their original publication which is something I had wished for back in the early 70's.
