Although I found almost no sandwiches I could actually make or eat (i'm a vegetarian) I thoroughly enjoyed reading Roadfood Sandwiches. The history and americana of the eateries presented is quite worth the read. I was amazed the book had Leona's little New Mexican tiendita for not one but two sandwiches. I certainly hope to see at least some of the other famous eateries in my travels.

rounded up from 3.5*, the stories in this book are what makes this book a treat, there weren't too many unique ideas or things I wanted to try, photos would have been nice

Great stories and mouth-watering sandwich descriptions from the road by Gourmet Magazine's Jane and Michael Stern. The Sterns provide recipes for all the delights in question (excepting hotdogs and hamburgers), and yet there are no pictures of the glorious repast! Each description should have a nice color photo of the condiment-spattered Sterns as they overcome their meal.

The Sterns are featured weekly on NPR's The Splendid Table, heard on Youngstown's local public radio station WYSU (88.5) Saturdays at 3 pm and Sundays at 11 am.

I want to be pals with the Sterns. They have more fun and they find the best places to hang out. What more can one ask of a pal? Plus they make great chatty cookbooks - which are the only kind of cookbooks I like since I don't actually cook, I just like to read the stories and look at the pictures, and then with a great, longing, sigh - eat something miniscule and count the points and have the teeniest of pity parties for myself.

Books like this have a very particular market. I'm a sandwich connoisseur, so I personally enjoyed it. Some of the places they hit that I'm familiar with are overrated, and it could have used pictures.

Interesting -- Looking for a recipe for your favorite road food sandwich? Check-out this book!

My favorite is Fried Bologna at a tavern in Caldwell, Ohio.

A tasty blend of small diner history with the savory recipes included. Can't wait to continue this road trip!

One of those feel good travel books that you either realize that "Hey, I've eaten there!" or "That's close enough... Let's go!"

Actual pictures of the sandwiches would've earned that last star. Though, would that be like illustrating Anais Nin? One wonders.
