Detailed Discussion

This afternoon, expect ongoing showery weather and cooler temperatures. A cold front extending into the southwestern US is moving eastward today, bringing with it the possibility of atmospheric disturbances. These disturbances have the potential to produce scattered thunderstorms across the region, especially over higher terrain, during the afternoon hours. As the front continues to progress eastward the chance of showers will diminish overnight from the west to the east.

For Monday, expect scattered showers that will gradually diminish through the afternoon into the evening. The weather will remain rainy and cool, with temperatures only reaching the 60s. An upper-level trough is currently positioned overhead. This trough has been dominating the weather pattern the past few days and will continue to dominate the pattern until Tuesday. This means we can anticipate continued rounds of precipitation throughout the day today. However, as the trough gradually moves northeastward, the likelihood of showers will decrease. By Tuesday morning, the trough will have moved off over the north Atlantic, bringing some much needed relief from this rainy weather.

Today, a good chance of showers throughout the day tapering off Tuesday evening. Another round of showers returns on Monday with storm totals likely staying below 0.25 inches. Tuesday will be generally dry, with a slight chance of scattered showers mostly over higher terrain northeast.

Drying conditions remaining fair to poor today with a good chance of showers, and minimum relative humidities near 70 percent. Additional showers possible Monday, with fair to poor drying continuing, with minimum relative humidities in the 50s. Drying conditions slightly improving Tuesday, with fewer showers, and minimum relative humidities in the 40s.

Frost:
No frost for the foreseeable future.

15 hours and 26 minutes

The summer of 1933, famous for the beginnings of the Dust Bowl in the Great Plains, was also hot and dry locally. On this date a heat wave was underway, topping out at 96 degrees in Cornwall, VT in the Champlain basin, and 95 in Enosburg Falls, and Rutland. The 95 degrees measured in St. Johnsbury was the first of 3 consecutive record highs, records which still stand today.
