Giant Step/De Ole Folks At Home aus dem Jahre 1969 war Tajs kommerzieller Höhepunkt und man versteht mühelos den Grund. Die erste Hälfte des Albums (ursprünglich als Doppel-Set veröffentlicht) präsentiert Taj und seine Band, wie sie Rock, Pop und Blues bei Songs zusammenbringen wie "Take A Giant Step", "Give Your Woman What She Wants" und "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl". Die zweite Hälfte erscheint etwas ruhiger und zurückhaltender, wenn Taj mit Banjo, Harmonika und akustischer Gitarre Solo-Interpretationen von "Fishing Blues", "Stagger Lee" und "Light Rain Blues" liefert. Giant steps ist das beste album, das ich von ihm kenne. Einfach nur genial! Taj überwiegend als sänger und harmonikaspieler, ein paar grandiose soli und die begleitband ist auch klasse. Einziger schwachpunkt T.M.s unseliger hang zur ausblendung. Ich glaube nur ein titel hat einen richtigen schluss - aber bei so großartigen songs ist das marginal.
De ole folks bringt TM solo, also eher folkig. Aber auch hier herausragende songs (auch wenn er mit seinem lied über "good women" wohl kaum den preis des frauenfreundlichsten bluesers erringen wird). Bei beiden alben glänzt TM mit seiner unnachahmlichen stimme (rauher samt), bei ole folks so intim aufgenommen, als säße er dir gegenüber.
Die zusammenstellung des swingenden, zum teil rockigen Giant step mit dem eher ruhigen, folkigen ole folks ist genial, weil sie die ganze breite von T.M.s großem können wiedergibt.
Für liebhaber von gutem, erdigem blues sehr zu empfehlen - für fans von Taj Mahal unentbehrlich.
Tatsächlich ist dieses Album zweigeteilt: Die ersten 9 Tracks, "Giant Steps", bieten soliden Blues mit viel Soul- und Motown-Rhythmus; Taj Mahal und seine Begleitband (Jesse Edwin Davis, Gary Gilmore und Chuck Blackwell) präsentieren sich in bester Spiellaune und spielen Eigenes ebenso wie Coverversionen von den Monkees bis Leadbelly, und zwar immer mit diesem unverkennbar locker zurückgelehnten Taj-Mahal-Sound. Bereits hier sind einige wahre Meilensteine (bzw. eben giant steps) zu hören: Gleich das Pfeif-Solo von "Ain't Gwine Whistle Dixie" hat Suchtpotential; der Titelsong wiederum ist ganz einfach schön, ein klarer Fall von unspektakulärem Blues, den man je öfter je lieber anhört. Ähnlich genial ist "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" mit seinen Ragtime-Anklängen. Diese erste Hälfte des Albums schließt ein nachgerade klassischer Rhythm'n'Blues ab: "Bacon Fat".
Typisch für die Linie dieser ersten Album-Hälfte sind jedoch der 7. und 8. Track: Bei "Keep Your Hands off Her" spielen Taj Mahal und seine Truppe diesen Leadbelly-Klassiker mit veritablem Motown-Einschlag, und bei "Farther On down the Road" haben sie sich hörbar von Ray Charles beeinflussen lassen: Ein Country-Blues mit eher traditioneller Instrumentierung, dem sie jede Menge Soul- und Motown-Rhythmus verpassen. In beiden Fällen ist ihnen das Vorhaben vollauf gelungen.
Aber es kommt noch besser: Die zweite Hälfte des Albums, "De Ole Folks at Home", bestreitet Taj Mahal im Alleingang -- sparsam und wirkungsvoll, mit Gitarre, Banjo oder Mundharmonika. Alle drei Instrumente beherrscht er meisterhaft, bei "A Little Soulful Tune" reicht ihm auch schon rhythmisches Klatschen zum Himmelstürmen.
Wäre da nicht die exzellente Tonqualität, würde man glauben, hier sei ein verjüngter Blind Willie McTell oder ein Sonny Terry wiederauferstanden. Bereits die a capella-Version von Leadbellys "Linin' Track" ist ein Erlebnis; Taj Mahal faucht, grantelt und singt diesen Klassiker ganz in der Tradition der alten Bluesmeister -- allein mit diesem Solo beweist er, dass er zu den ganz Großen des Blues gehört. Es geht weiter, mit Traditonals, Eigenem und einigen Coverversionen (darunter der "Candy Man" von Gary Davis und der unverwüstliche "Stagger Lee" als tiefschwarzer Blues) -- ein Track besser als der andere.
Geerdet sind hier alle Tracks -- Taj Mahal zelebriert hier förmlich den Blues, verzichtet auf alle zeitgenössischen Einflüsse (dass er die zu verarbeiten weiß, hat er ja soeben, in der "Giant Step"-Abteilung, gründlich bewiesen), legt schon in jungen Jahren der Menschheit ganzen Jammer und der Südstaaten ganze Musikalität in seinen Gesang. Typischer Sprechgesang in allen denkbaren Variationen ist zu hören: "Cluck Old Hen" ist tatsächlich eine musikalische Variation über das Thema "Hühnerstall", ebenso wie man im bereits erwähnten "Linin' Track" die Dampflok richtiggehend fauchen hört. Zum Blues kommt noch Bluegrass, meist mit virtuosem Banjo (z.B. in "Coloured Aristocracy") -- und der "Fishing Blues" lässt einen ahnen, woher Arlo Guthrie seine Melodie von "Alice's Restaurant" genommen haben mag...
War es noch bei der "Giant Step"-Hälfte vielleicht noch möglich, die allerbesten Songs herauszufinden, so ist das bei der "De Ole Folks at Home"-Hälfte unmöglich; hier haut einen garantiert jeder Track um.

La prima fase della carriera di questo immenso musicista girovago (nato a New York, cresciuto a Springfield e poi attivo a Santa Monica solo per citare alcune tappe) è stata ineccepibile, perfetta. Tra i suoi grandi lavori sono da annoverare quindi anche questi "Giant step"/ De ole folk at home" entrambi del 1969.
Due album magnifici ma decisamente diversi tra loro.
"Giant step" è un album sulla scia del blues elettrico chicagoano che ha nella presenza del chitarrista Jesse Ed Davis un valore aggiunto non indifferente. Blues viscerale, davvero intenso, con uno spiccato senso lirico. Sono brani che entrano in circolo immediatamente, schietti davvero puri.
Ma con "De ole folks at home" dobbiamo scomodare quella parolona spesso abusata ma che in questo caso è d'obbligo, ossia capolavoro. Qui Mahal è solo, lui la sua voce, la sua armonica, la sua chitarra e il suo banjo e tanta tanta magia. Qui il blues diventa arcaico, primitivo purissimo. Qui si viaggia davvero nel tempo, si sprofonda nel profondo Sud degli States, qui si tirano in ballo figure come Son House, Lightnin Hopkins, il rural blues, l'old time music. Questa è musica che rapisce.
