Helen Wagner Obituary

NEW YORK (AP) - Actress Helen Wagner, who played mild-mannered Nancy Hughes on the CBS soap opera "As the World Turns" for more than a half-century and spoke its first words, has died at age 91.

She died Saturday, said the show's New York-based production company, TeleNext Media Inc., which didn't say where she died or what was the cause of her death.

Wagner opened "As the World Turns" when it premiered on April 2, 1956, with the words: "Good morning, dear." She held the Guinness World Record for playing the same role on television for the longest amount of time, TeleNext Media said.

"All of us at 'As the World Turns' are deeply saddened by Helen's passing," executive producer Christopher Goutman said in a statement. "She is loved by generations of fans, and while we will miss her greatly Helen will always remain the heart and soul of 'As the World Turns.'"

While Wagner, who was born in Lubbock, Texas, was seen less often in later deca des, no other network television performer came close to her run playing a single character.

"It has been fun to keep the character true to herself, no matter who is writing it at the moment," she said in 1998.

She was still part of the cast, though with a small presence, in December 2009, when CBS announced that "As the World Turns" was being canceled and its last episode would air in September 2010.

"As the World Turns" was the first daytime TV drama to run a full half-hour rather than 15 minutes. It rose to No. 1 in the daytime ratings and, in the 1970s, was expended to an hour.

In a 1968 New York Times interview, Wagner called Nancy "a tentpole character."

"Nothing ever happens to Nancy," Wagner said. "She's the one the others come and talk to."

Nancy was morally upright, too: The soap opera website soaps.com put a one-word entry under her "flings and relationships": None.

Fans often mixed up Wagner with the character she portrayed, sending her letters carping about Nancy's homemaking or what they saw as her meddling in her children's lives.

But the many fans who liked Nancy/Wagner could also be a problem. She told the Times in 1977 that a woman once ran up and kissed her as she shopped at a suburban supermarket. "She said, 'Oh, Nancy, I've loved you so long I really must kiss you again,' but at that point I managed to escape."

Real life intruded on the show in historic fashion on Nov. 22, 1963, when "As the World Turns" was still performed live on air. Wagner's character was talking about upcoming Thanksgiving plans ("I've thought about it, and I gave it a great deal of thought ...") when the broadcast was interrupted midsentence with a "CBS News Bulletin" sign.

Viewers then heard Walter Cronkite announcing that President John F. Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. The actors themselves weren't told at the time.

In a 1998 Associated Press interview, Wagner said she wished her cha racter hadn't receded into the background in later years while most of the plot developments happened to the younger characters.

"I don't like the making of Nancy into only an extra figure at parties," she said. "She is too dynamic a person to be made into a ghost."

She thought Nancy, by then twice-widowed, could provide a moral compass for younger characters on the show, giving another generation's perspective.

"The characters now are destructive, mean, immoral, unattractive and selfish," she said. "They care about nothing but themselves - me, me, me. That's a dead end. That's no life."

Still, she loved the storytelling of daytime television and remembered the maze of complex plots from decades earlier.

Don MacLaughlin, who played Nancy's first husband, Chris Hughes, died in 1986 at age 79, not long after the show celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special program devoted to Chris and Nancy Hughes' 50th wedding anniversary.

Chris' death was then written into the plotline, and Nancy later married a detective named Dan McClosky, played by Dan Frazer. McClosky's battle with Alzheimer's disease gave Wagner/Hughes a meaty problem onscreen for a few years, but the producers eventually killed him off, too.

Wagner, born in 1918, studied drama and music at Monmouth College in Illinois, graduating in 1938. She later helped the college raise money for a new theater.

She appeared on Broadway in the 1940s including a small role in the musical "Oklahoma!" and in off-Broadway and summer stock productions.

In 2002 Wagner received a plaque on the Buddy Holly Walk of Fame in her hometown, TeleNext Media said, and in 2004 she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Before gaining her "As the World Turns" gig, she also appeared on early television shows such as "The Philco Television Playhouse" and a series called "The World of Mr. Sweeney."

She married producer Robert Willey in 1954, and over the years he served as her manager and agent as well as producing some of her stage appearances.

I just realized that it's been over a year since our greatly admired Helen/Nancy passed away. How I do miss her and ATWT.
I wish there were some way to personally contact either Bob's or Helen's family because I have such a lovely recording of a 1999 interview that I conducted with them. I sent both tape and CD copies to Helen after Bob passed away and hopefully they were found among Helen's possessions.
My continued condolences are to the family and all of Helen's fans.

I was six years old when Helen made her debut on As The World Turns. I watched every single show if I wasn't working and even took a TV/Radio combination to work so I could listen to the verbal part on the Radio at work. As a child I even ran from my school bus stop to get home in time to see ATWT. I cannot imagine the show no longer being on but more than that I cannot imagine a World without Helen Wagner. Though I never met her personally, she was a Mother and Grandmother figure in my life. God Bless you Helen and Thank you for many dedicated years of giving us all good advice on how to live life to the fullest. Prayers to your family and many many friends.

Helen Wagner shone as an accomplished actress with a remarkably long and successful career. She took the character of Nancy Hughes and gave her numerous layers. She never portrayed the cliche perfect wife and mother. Nancy could be tough (she was appalled when another character, a young woman, couldn't shell peas), judgmental and stubborn and she was nobody's fool. But all that was secondary to her sense of responsibility as a wife, parent, aunt, grandparent and friend. She was solid as a rock, a very beautiful rock. Helen breathed life into the ATWT scripts year in and year out. There was never the sense she was acting. She just brought Nancy alive with utter reality. Bless this beautiful, talented, hard working lady.

Many thoughts and prayers go out to Helen's family. She had a grand run on As The Worlds Turns maybe the thought of the show coming to an end was just to much for her. Would have great to have her say the closing lines of the show since she sid the opening lines on the first show so many years ago.
RIP Helen/Nancy We all love you..

May 10, 2010

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My condolences to Helen's family. I began watching ATWT in February, when learning the show was to end this coming September. Being age 58 now, many can likely understand a guy being curious. Many memories of neighbors watching the show in the 1957-era, and thinking "it will always be with us", but will now end this year. We take all these things for granted, until the losses occur. Persons, TV shows, old cars....all are a part of our lives. And all matter, to one extent or another. I always try to say "thank you" to all persons who made life good and interesting. None are ever forgotten.

My heart goes out to Helen's family - her real one and her television one. I have been a fan of As The World Turns since the early days when I used to watch it when I was home from school. Helen's character Nancy was a wonderful character and I have missed seeing her on a regular basis on the show. It has been my sincere wish that ATWT producers would see fit to let Nancy have not only the first words but the last words as well - and maybe they still can in a flashback scene. That would truly be a wonderful gift to fans of hers and the show. May she rest in peace.

"Nancy" was on my childhood TV screen much of my childhood because Mom watched "As the World Turns" daily. As a kid I didn't know what all of the drama and romance was all about. We only just lost James Mitchell from AMC, and now Helen Wagner from ATWT. It seems that all the great ones are leaving us. Helen Wagner's achievement of playing the same character for 54 years is surely a record that will never be surpassed. We will all miss her terribly.

An inspiration to all who knew her character in As the World Turns. It would have been nice to have had her say the final words on the show as well as the first words. As a young girl I watched this daily with my grandmother who loved and watched it until the day she died. Rest in Peace Ms. Wagner.

I watched Helen since the first day. I am so sad for her passing. So glad she was able to make it to the celebration they just had for Bob and and Kim.

I was so saddened to hear about Nancy's death, I have been watching ATWT since Nov. 1956, along with my parents. She was a wonderful lady, my sympathies go out to all of Helen Wagner's family. I also truly hate to see ATWT come to an end in September. I do hope they are going to do a special, just about Nancy.

I am saddened to hear of Helen Wagner/Nancy's passing. I last saw her on Bob and Kim's 25th anniversary party on As The World Turns. Helen/Nancy was a lovely person and reminded me so much of my grandmother. I am 45 years old and will miss her and As The World Turns when it goes off the air in the fall. God Bless You Helen/Nancy.
