St. Stephan Münster in Breisbach is an imposing building on an elevated site dominating the city skyline and visible from far away, certainly beyond the city limits. The church dates back to the twelfth century, being enlarged and remodelled in the fifteenth century. That's the reason why one can observe in the building that both the romanesque and the gothic styles are combined in a Latin cross plan. The edifice is a stunning jewel overlooking the Rhine. The church towers are fantastic architectural elements. In accordance with the styles in which the temple was built due to the aforesaid reasons, those concerning the belfries are different, the North belfry being in romanesque style while the South one was built in gothic style. Unfortunately, the Münster was heavily damaged during the Second World War. Happily enough however, it was duly reconstructed.
It's a three nave church, the central one being wider and higher than the side aisles. They are separated from each other by roughly square sturdy columns supporting pointed arches typical of gothic style. The vaults are ribbed ones with nerves stemming from thin pilasters located on the angles formed by the said square columns and the walls. The latter are bear. Those of the central nave are plain, except as to some narrow romanesque style windows above the columns. Likewise there are windows in the same style but wider than the aforementioned ones on the walls of the side aisles.
Notwithstanding the foregoing, some frescoes can be admired on a few wall panels, such as the mural painting representing “The Martin's Last Judgement” by Martin Schongauer. The church houses also some other artworks worth being observed. Among them there are some interesting paintings as, for instance that showing a crucifixion scene, and two beautiful ones representing the Virgin and Christ respectively.
Likewise, the high altar is a marvellous masterpiece. The figures contained in the reredos in a tryptic form – little statues representing the Virgin in the center and some Saints on both sides – are stupendous.
On the basis of the foregoing, the visit of this unique building is a must while in Briesbach or nearby. The visit should be carried out as slowly as possible in order to observe any single detail, especially the stated frescoes and the high altar, and so try to apprehend the high value of the whole romanesque and gothic style temple. After the visit one can still enjoy beholding the view over the Rhin from a broad raised wall at a few meters from the church façade.

A fabulous way to spend a couple of hours while moored from a river cruise. About a 15 minute walk from the river Geldermann offers a tour of their caves which are super interesting and last just over an hour. Book the standard 2pm tour if you speak German but if you are English only speaking get in contact with them in advance and they will arrange an English tour / tasting. Would recommend.

The architecture is lovely and very varied. Many small shops aimed at tourists - but nice quality, not tat. Steep streets need walking with care. It is worth looking up at many of the hanging shop signs as they are a work of art. Nice walk along the river Rhine.

My wife and I, as well as a couple of friends, went to Breisach for the Saturday market on a stop on our Viking Rhine River Cruise this past April. The market was in the town square and vendors were selling crafts, fruit and cheeses. We walked from the square up the hill to St. Stephan Munster. It was a very clean town with a variety of shops.

Looked like a great place to spend time on a rainy day but closed for holiday. Note if your are on the hill get someone to give you directions down and I ended up right in front of museum. If your at river level follow the road around following the river to get there. Sorry I missed this

No need to worry - Sid will put you at ease once you meet him. We were two couples who bike but had limited e-bike experience. We were given a short tutorial and put at ease. Maps and ride options were provided and clear. Great recommendations on places to stop, eat and have a local wine or beer.
We saw the most beautiful scenery of our stay up close - wineries, poppies, horse farm, swans, beautiful gardens. Stopped along the way for lunch at one spot recommended for an amazing lunch and great beer!

The climb to tour St. Stephen's Cathedral is steep but the views from the top of the hill are worth it, at least on a cool morning. I probably would not attempt it in the heart of a summer afternoon. The cathedral is beautiful, perhaps not the most beautiful in Germany, but interesting history. This is an ideal place to explore on your own.
