Doctor Who Season 14's The One Who Waits Details Clarified By RTD

Summary

  • The Doctor's newest companion, Ruby Sunday, is already shrouded in mystery.
  • Maestro, the Toymaker's child, believes that there is something wrong with Ruby's existance.
  • Showrunner Russell T Davies promises that the mystery will be resolved in an exciting and unexpected way.

Maestro's warning in Doctor Who season 14, episode 2 should worry the Doctor and Ruby Sunday. Though the two-episode premiere came on May 11, Disney+ is considering the Christmas special "The Church on Ruby Road" as the first episode of the season. That means that the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby (Millie Gibson) are already well on their way to understanding each other as traveling companions. Unfortunately, the godlike Maestro indicated to the Doctor that Ruby is far from what she seems, emphasizing that "this creature is very wrong".

While every version of the Doctor encounters mysteries during their journey, Ruby's mystery is enough to terrify even the Toymaker's child, leaving them to wonder if an unknown entity called "the Oldest One" was present at their birth. In an interview with TVLine, showrunner Russell T Davies explained that viewers should be "very" worried about the threat that Ruby poses.

In the video, Davies emphasizes that "Something happened on that Christmas Eve in 2004. Something extraordinary’s going on." He promises that the "titanic" mystery will be explained on-screen in a climax featuring "some of Millie’s greatest acting, and Ncuti’s, as well. It’s really wonderful stuff." He also describes a mystery woman played by Susan Twist who "seems to be playing a different person every time" and promises a surprising climax for that plot as well.

The Mystery Of Ruby Sunday

Doctor Who Season 14 Is Already Filled With Mysteries

Most modern Doctor Who companions have some degree of mystery to them. Rose was surrounded by the phrase "Bad Wolf", Donna had warnings about the DoctorDonna, Amy Pond was threatened by cracks in reality, and Clara was viewed as the "impossible girl". Ruby Sunday is simply the latest in a long line of mysteries, but the threat she poses is as dangerous as ever. With an otherwordly being feeling threatened by Ruby, her backstory could very well threaten the world's existence.

The Ruby mystery began in "The Church on Ruby Road", as it was revealed that Ruby was abandoned on the day of her birth, Christmas Eve. Ruby has been trying to find her biological parents ever since, but she has never been able to find them. Instead, she discovered that her parents' DNA could not be found on any database. The Doctor even went so far as to test Ruby's DNA and found that she was a typical 19-year-old human. While his investigation has not been concluded, the Doctor is suspicious about Ruby's origin.

Susan Twist's various characters could also play into the mystery, possibly even connecting with whoever "the Oldest One" ends up being. While Ruby and the Doctor have not yet noticed her, she has already played multiple characters and has been constantly appearing around the Doctor and his companion. Since Ruby is searching for whoever left her in the snow at the church, Twist's characters may be trying to lead her there. Whoever Twist is playing and whatever Ruby's mystery is, it has managed to draw fear from a most powerful villain, making Ruby's origin Doctor Who's latest compelling question.
