  • The Bar-Kays

I was a little disappointed in the Bar-Kay’s. I must be honest and say the primary reason was because I didn’t know the songs, but a secondary reason was that the sound was poor! You could not understand the vocals over the music which was much too loud. The sound booth was in the back of the music hall and the sound was good there, but in the middle and front, the sound was poor. This is the second show I’ve seen at the Music Hall @ Dallas Fair Grouds and the other show had the same issue. The local sound people need to improve significantly. I do sound so I know its possible.

  • Bar-kays are the funkiest group I’ve ever seen perform. In their sparkling white and silver suits, complete with little white bowler hats, they look every inch the perfect funk and soul group. I’ve never seen a crowd look so contentedly happy as everyone swayed in time, clicking their fingers and cheering on the band. With all the manic electronic pop that’s about nowadays, it’s so refreshing to see a band really take their time with their music – allowing a soulful voice to speak to the crowd rather than crazy electro beats.

Formed in Memphis, Tennessee, the Bar-kays are a group that has undergone many musical transitions. Originally, back in 1966, the group catered to R&B tastes with their single ‘Soul Finger’ making it to number 3 on the American R&B billboard chart in 1967. However, after Lloyd Smith joined the band in 1973 they began to move away from R&B and to explore the genre of funk music. This genre has stuck and their 2012 studio album, Grown Folks, maintains this chilled out, ridiculously cool style of music.

The Bar-kays never seem to have taken much time off so there is an exorbitant amount of previous music to catch up on – they released an album pretty much every two years since 1967! However between 1994 and 2012 they have been a little bit absent so hearing their new album Grown Folks has been a treat! And the best news is that you can catch the Bar-kays performing soon - on the 13th September they will be performing in San Diego. So look them up, listen to some tunes, and get over to see them!
