Two hoodlums, Trigger (Mickey Rooney) & Leo (Dick Emery) are hired by the unscrupulous J.K. (Peter Cook) to kidnap his niece Victoria (Alexandra Bastedo). The daughter of a wealthy businessman has been kidnapped, and the chief of police, under a lot of pressure to find her as soon as possible, assigns officers Kopek (John Candy) and Broom (Lawrence Dane) to track her down and bring her back safe and sound.

Comedy is probably the most subjective of all genres. One might laugh with Monty Python, another with Woody Allen, and yet another with Adam Sandler. That said, I find it hard to believe that there are more than a handful of moviegoers out there who think "Find the Lady" is funny. While I'll confess that I laughed out loud a couple of times, 80% of this movie is pure dreck. Two inept cops, Broom and Kopek (Lawrence Dane & John Candy) are tasked to find a kidnapped off tune opera singer (Alexandra Bastedo), who hasn't actually been kidnapped. The kidnappers (Dick Emery & Mickey Rooney) are equally inept and working for the singers uncle (Peter Cook). Confusion and chaos reigns.
Almost Laurel and Hardy style slapstick farce from Canada certainly has the cast but not the comedy. Laughs are supposed to come from the accident prone antics but it's all pretty forced and frankly woefully amateurish. I imagine it must have been funded by a pizza chain, if they're not eating it, they're talking about it. Of interest only if you want to see early John Candy or blink and you'll miss him, Delroy Lindo, otherwise it's a waste of some talented people. Perhaps the bizarrest thing to currently be found on Netflix UK.

What a weird thing to stumble across on Netflix of all places. This might be John Candy’s first movie role? There’s actually some good slapstick bits here. It’s just a shame that they were all used up in the first 10 minutes. The rest is pretty tough to get through. There’s a part about halfway through where an Asian man appears on screen and you hear a giant gong sound effect and then he just leaves. He has no lines, he doesn’t do anything, there’s no joke. The movie just pauses for a second to do a big racism so that’s the kind of writing you’re dealing with here.
somewhere between a buddy cop film and a 50's detective story but also a gag-filled farce. Most of the jokes are pretty simple and straight-forward but they managed to get a few good laughs out of me.
The version on amazon prime video is a blurry mess and it's almost impossible to make out any details but I can at least tell that John Candy weighs 100lbs less then I'm used to seeing him.

Actually... they didn't mean it as a running gag... but it turned out to be the only funny thing in this film. (At least to me).
Well... the title of the film sums up the wafer-thin plot. Two bumbling detectives try to ...erm... find the lady. I mean, it was hard to identify ANY sort of a plot... but that's the best way to describe it, I suppose.
They try to make this a farce at times, shoving in comic bits that don't work, silly situations that are just tired and jokes that deliver nothing but silence. It's awkwardly bad.

Apparently this is John Candy's second time bringing the bumbling Officer Kopek to the silver screen, the first being in It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time. I have to say, if this is his refined and "lived-in" version of the character, I'm never going near that first movie...
Broad comedy relying heavily on slapstick humor containing very few actual funny moments but which really digs in with the casual racism (is that really a gong and Oriental music playing every time the Asian character is on screen?).

The chaotically pratfall-laden, proto-Police Academy, bungled kidnapping farce 'Find The Lady' is brought to witheringly noisome life by a remarkably ecclectic cast of entertainingly larger-than-life Thespians: Peter Cook, Mickey Rooney, Lawrence Dane, Alexandra Bastedo, Dick Emery, and a very young-looking, effortlessly likeable, John Candy is a dunderheaded delight as the catastrophically inept, perpetually blundering cop, Kopek!
